Got in on the first practice a little late - from the computer it doesn't look overly exciting which none of the Friday practices tend to be anyway.

    Kimi - 1:21.624
Davidson (is he really going to Super Aguri??)
    Michael - 1:22.499 - off .875 from Kimi
    Pedro
    Wurz
    Rubens
    Button
    Doornbos
    Trulli
    Winkelhock
    Jani
Luizzi (yeah - he's ahead of Speed)
    Speed
    etc.

Alonso and Fisi didn't show completed lap times - 19th and 22nd respectively

Massa, Webber, Rosbert, Heidfeld, Kubica not out.

Second practice in a a couple hours.

    Carol

    Updated commentary:
Kimi Raikkonen topped the times in Friday's opening practice for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix winding up ahead of Anthony Davidson in a Honda at the end of a dull and overcast session.

Davidson, the test and reserve driver, was seven tenths of a second behind the pace-setting lap of 1:21.624 clocked by Raikkonen, with Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari third fastest.

After heavy overnight showers, the circuit was damp and drying, but the weather was heavy, cool and threatening as the session began.

There were few incidents other than brief off-track excursions that claimed Neel Jani in a Toro Rosso-Cosworth, Italian Giancarlo Fisichella in his Renault, German Markus Winkelhock in a Midland and Dutchman Christijan Albers, his teammate.

Good news for Button, Trulli and Albers -

The Honda engine of Jenson Button and the Toyota engines of Jarno Trulli and Christijan Albers have all had work done on them - but none of the drivers will suffer any penalty.

The Honda power-unit was opened to replace four cam cover bolts where the seals are attached to, while Trulli and Albers' engine had a crankshaft to oil-pump seal replaced.

A report from F1 technical delegate Jo Bauer said: "This work was carried out...under the supervision of an FIA technical delegate in accordance with Article 87 of the 2006 Formula One Sporting Regulations."

At commercial break Kubica in 4th - interesting comment Peter Windsor made - Kubica's first GP he ever attended was in Hungary and Villeneuve was driving - now its' Kubica driving for Villeneuve.

Massa, FA, GF, Michael - time to go back to the tv.

I missed some of the pit row scuttlebutt that was being reviewed by the crew this morning. Anybody catch the controversies? Apparently some bad blood issues among Ferrari, Williams and Renault.

Pretty useless session, especially with the variable weather conditions.

Good morning - I caught the tv on and off while doing some chores - got a chuckle out of David Hobbs' remark when Albers was having problems -- said he needs one of those mass dampening things on the front and back too. Heard some comments made regarding Alonso, Renault and seemingly lack thereof teamwork - Alonso having a seemingly don't care type attitude - best was with all the problems Kimi encountered during last race he still pulled off third. Graining on tires appeared to be a little problem today.

Best of all in second session - Massa kicked butt again!!!! 1.319 faster than 2nd place Alonso.

Hi Carol. It did appear that Renault was trying to send a message with the second practice session. Michael was just cruising around for the most part, while Felipe threw up the 1:21 to serve as a reminder. It was funny when Varsha and Hobbs were talking about MS and FA throwing down the gauntlet while on the track simultaneously, and Michael's just cruising and even lets Alonso by. I think Ferrari is p!ssing in Renault's corn flakes right now. They're toying with them. The Speed guys want to keep it interesting, but they're wrong to suggest you have to compare Renault's time with Michael's and not Felipe's.

This is going to be a very interesting championship when all is said and done.

You are absolutely correct about this being a very interesting championship when all is said and done - hopefully it will go to the final race. I really think Friday for the top contention teams is a mind-playing games day. Wonder what things will be like next year when Friday becomes Fan Friendly Friday or whatever Bernie will name it? I thought that was Alonso that Michael let drive by - interesting move. Did you see Gil giving a big hug to Rubens in the garage? I thought I heard them make a comment to the effect of "new contract" - (please - no one quote me on this as I wasn't paying full attention to the screen!!) - have to watch the replay and pay attention!

Qualifying should be good in the morning - wonder what the weather conditions will be like?

    Have a great day,
    Carol

I woke up this morning thinking exactly the same thing:

It looked like Alonso had it in the bag, repeat of 05, but now MS comes back hard. I think he'll continue his momentum and tie the points before we go into the final rounds of the season. This could go down to the wire. And I'm sure in retrospect the 06 season will be a great one in our memories, regardless of who will clinch it.

I was confused by the announcers saying that the cold weather is really affecting Michelin runners. I thought that Bridgestone had the problem in cold weather. ?

It seemed like they all had tire graining problems this morning. However, it stands to reason that the cold weather should benefit the Michelin cars, based on past results.

It's getting personal b/w Alonso and Schumaker. I don't know that mocking the guy in the points lead (that's how it appeared to me) is such a good idea, but it's clear Ferrari feels good about themselves right now.

I would expect that Renault will respond with a couple of impact improvements following the testing ban. Those final 3 races should be awesome...all-out war!

awesome. 2 seconds is enormous I find it hard to believe he'll even be in the top 10 with that penalty. Alonso's gotta be so frustrated by now it'll be interesting to see how he handles all of this come raceday.

What is he thinking? I guess that's what the scuttlebutt was about this morning. Alonso needs to stop worrying about other drivers' antics. He clearly gets frustrated by them, but now it's going to cost him in what is becoming a pretty good soap opera season in F1.

I also disagree with Flavio's assessment about F1 "hijacking" the championship. They have been running interference all season. Renault was able to alter Ferrari's car with the "flexi-wing" saga and now Ferrari is returning the favor. Both actions are petty, but don't play the victim card once the other team responds in kind. I distinctively remember Renault being quite vocal about the "legality" of the rear wing after stewards had determined it was in compliance.

I think Ferrari has the pace to beat Renault this weekend even without the penalties.

I speculate that Alonso will sit out the QLF sessions. His fastest lap today was 1:23.097. Add two seconds to that time and you get 1:25.097 which translates to 20th on the grid. So qualifying will not really get him much benefit. Sure, the laptimes are bound to improve from today as the rubber gets down but I think all the teams will progress forward a bit. The difference between the front runners and tailend runners should be nearly the same.

The interesting thing would be to see if he can make his way forward from the back end of the grid without hitting anyone. Michael better make the most of this weekend. A golden egg has been laid in his lap.
