You are all talking logic. This sounds like more politics than logic. Does it really make sense that MS would have intentionally overtaken on a red flag? In practice?? How did a race steward come up with the two seconds?

The FIA made a mistake with Alonso, this is their way of correcting the mistake. You see this in the NBA all of the time. Like the SpeedTV announcers stated, this type of penalty has never been levied before, why now?

MS himsef is acknowledging his brain fade, from the bbc link

"I'm incredibly angry, but I have to blame myself," said the German, while Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn added: "I don't think there is an explanation - he made a mistake."

    Right on.

What Alonso and MS did deserves penalties, no doubt. Rules are rules. But c'mon these guys are fighting for the championship. So penalize them in the pocket book with gigantic fines (say 10 mio) and/or have them do public work (e.g. visit a children's hospital in Budapest). But for crying out loud don't mingle with the championship. This is history in the making you're interfering with.

Had they committed fouls that had them given a competitive edge (e.g. passing under yellow or red during the race), then yes, give them racing related penalties (drive through for instance). But they committed "only" minor fouls that gave them no advantage.

This is the same BS FIA pulled on MS back in 94 for a cerrated plank at Spa. All they wanted to do was give Damon Hill another crack at the championship. This time it hit Alonso and then they realized the enormous stupidity of their action and "corrected" it by penalizing MS in the same way.

Well, at least it's good to see that Alonso has to pass both Red Bulls to get to Schumi. I really hope everything goes well for Schumi in turn 1.

Looks like Speed cooked his goose again . . . autosport saying . . .

    Speed penalised for impeding

American Scott Speed has lost his best three times from qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning he will start from 20th position.

The Toro Rosso driver, who had qualified in 19th place, was penalised by the race stewards after they deemed he had impeded a rival during the first part of qualifying.

His fourth best time allowed him to lose just one position, meaning he will start ahead of Midland's Christijan Albers and Super Aguri's Sakon Yamamoto.

another stupid move of the weekend and another chalk-up for the year

I'm not a Scott Speed fan by any means, but this is just plain stupid. This is friggin Monaco we're talking here! If you are slower and enter the midfield section, well then that's that for the guy behind you.

These stewards oughto be sent home.

Let's hope so. I think Schumi and Alonso will go around at least 3 cars each before turn one. But Alonso has the Red Bulls separating him from Schumi.

I think you guys are all way too optimistic. Both are buried in midfield and lucky if they make it through lap 1 in one piece. Start/finish line is short with basically a hairpin at the end. Also not very wide, particularly the clean part of the road.

I wasn't being optimistic that he would make it through turn 1 at all. He'll be lucky if he does.

I'm afraid I must have to end up agreeing with you. All it takes is one little oop's - the only safe ones are Kimi and Massa. I suspect that Pedro will get the better of Rubens and who knows what will happen between Webber and Ralf. DC's record of late hasn't been just outstanding immediately following the start. I think Alonso will either try to split Button and Klein or go wide on Klein. At that point MS is going to the center with row-mate DC going wide right and k-blamo here enters Alonso into the picture as he swings wide right (how many times has this happened before - going right). Then all MS has to do is play it very cautious taking advantage any other incidents - when clear run fast, let the stewards start waving the blue flags and it's a "run for the roses". Across the finish line comes MS, FM and KR nose to nose. Will this work - probably not but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a sense of imagination.

Add the potential of rain, and you have the making of a first lap first turn incident. I think Alonso will try to make a banzai attack from the grid, and could very well pass MS, who I hope has the sense to be careful.

Now for something different: I noticed the Ferraris have Martini sponsorship on the nose. Did they have this from the start of the season? I never noticed it before. Are Martini coming back big time as sponsors in the near future? Any news on that?

Maybe they came in anticipation of Kimi Raikkonen joining the team. Soon Finlandia and other Vodka players will hop on board too. I am sure Kimi wont have a tough time promoting these sponsors. :D

I think it was said before Martini was joining for sponsorship. Not sure if they will be as big a sponsor as Vodafone.

The latest theory in the Hungaroring paddock is that it was no coincidence that Fernando Alonso was involved in Michael Schumacher's 'red flag' incident.

One of the cars Schumacher passed illegally during Saturday practice was none other than the reigning World Champion, who is locked in battle for 2006 honours with the 37-year-old.

Given Alonso's existing two-second penalty, it is suggested that the Spaniard deliberately slowed his Renault to tempt Schumacher to pass, knowing that doing so would cost him a date with the Stewards.

Everyone in a red uniform chose their words very carefully on Saturday afternoon, including Ferrari boss Jean Todt who said 'everyone can draw their own conclusions'.

Ross Brawn added: "I leave it to you to decide if the penalty is fair."

Speaking to reporters, Schumacher, too, implored interested analysts to 'look at the video'.

"The pictures speak a clearer language," he added.

Pressed for why reporters should dash off to watch a replay, Schumacher added: "What I said is not difficult to understand; look at the video and form an opinion."

Oh heck, they don't show the kinky stuff unless you log in. ;)

Dang. That's like blocking "google" because you can look up something "bad". There's lots of good clean fun on youtube, too -- in the US, it's the only source for '06 WRC videos.

To summarize, Alonso slowed suddenly in front of another car, and Schumi wound up passing them both.

yep...clearly that's what happened...but nevertheless, MS fell for it! that's a rookie mistake.

to all the conspiracy theorists, if alonso and/or MS did nothing wrong, the stewards wouldn't have been able to penalise them...just keep that in mind.
