I know that all of us are hoping that there is not another Katrina next hurricane season, but nonetheless, there will be still be several hurricanes that hit the southern coast. Considering I am a high school senior, I wanted to spend the middle part (perhaps end of June through July) of next summer, my last before I start college, in the Deep South helping people recover from loss due to the hurricanes. I came upon this idea because I wanted to do something to help people out, but I think that doing aid work in Southeast Asia or Africa is a little too deep for me, at least for now. Anyways, is this idea feasible? Is there a big enough need for aid workers when there is no storm like Katrina? If it is feasible, would I be able to hop in with the Red Cross or a similar organization and go down with them and work their missions?

Thanks for any answers to my questions- I'm sure they will spawn a few more :)

Not yet- I just got back from going to Washington, D.C. for a week and I was hoping to go into their office in person some time soon. I'm verrrryyy busy with school and I'm going up to Pittsburgh on Freitag but luckily I still have a few months to try to get this all worked out. Thanks for the links, though.

Regardless of whether one hits next summer or not, there is still plenty of work down here from Katrina. We still see in the daily paper volunteer groups helping to tear down or build up houses in New Orleans or along the Gulf Coast. Most come down with church groups and such. Might be a good place to start.

Habitat for humanity is a great thing to contribute to. You basically assist in providing labor for needy families to get a new home. It also benefits you by teaching you some construction skills that you will use through your lifetime in home repairs etc...
Very nice of you to be thinking of others, you have a great outlook on life!
    :)
