And it's out in the Atlantic as we speak....They are calling for a FL landfall...William, YOU BETTER GET OUTTA THERE! :) ....Winds at 175mph currently....Rita was the 3rd strongest hurricane ever and Katrina was the 6th.

wind shear and eyewall cycling will take it's toll on it, should hit as a cat 2 or so.

eye is only 2-4 miles wide, VERY small, maybe she colapse before she gets close to the sunshine state !!

Modern equipment takes more exact measurements than what we had a decade ago. Don't buy into all this hype it is the strongest, #3, or #6. To me it is like beating an Olympic record from 1934 where as now you have exact digital timing and then you had a mechanical stop watch.

One thing I think we should have learned is the storms that go high earlier tend to land lower. It is the storms that do not scare use, a cat 2 that builds in the last 12 hours that always get us. If they forecast 12" snow, expect 8", if they forecast 6" worry about 18".

Do you think mankind is making these storms worse, with their polluting, lase-fare attitude to the environment and global warming.........nature biting back?????

    But Dam*!!!!

I live in Orlando, and the highest point in Florida is only 100 feet above sea level and that is in the panhandle.......

as Homer said..."Florida is the WANG of the US"
Doctor: "they prefer to call it the Sunshine state"

I think it's more of a natural cycle of nature, but in any event good luck to anyone that's in this animals path. It should decrease in intensity by landfall, but still be a significant storm.

Holy smoke! the last time it snowed in Miami I was in fourth grade (1977). This could be some sever snow drift with snow and wind!
I agree, it should be around a Cat. 2-3 when it hits.

I live in Orlando too, but the highest point in Florida is 345-feet and you are right about it being in the Panhandle. Orlando on average is about 100-feet above sea level. My house on the southwest side of town is at 125-feet.

I agree. I actually heard a meterologist or whomever know about weather discuss this. He said if global warming was so great, these storms would be weaker because the water temperature and air temperature would be closer together. Makes completely logical sense, but the enviornmental wacko's won't ever believe it.

I mean the earth goes through warming and cooling stages throughout it's life time....look at the past.

Actually, most forecast models having coming in around Naples as a Cat 4 and leaving through east coast of FL and back into the Atlantic as a Cat 2. Water is pretty warm down there still. Up on the panhandle and other gulf coast states, the water is much cooler and there is a high pressure system that is going to keep it south...All eyes will be on this one if the forecast models are correct.

I saw an interview several weeks ago with a "weather historian" (whatever that is...) who said all the hurricane activity over the past 3 years is more a return to normal than any radical shift in weather pattern.

According to pretty impressive data he presented, both the number and force of hurricanes in the gulf and caribbean have been significantly under historical norms for the past 25-30 years. Before that, there were periods with more hurricanes per season.

Another point relative to man causing this with "global warming". There is no firm evidence that man is having any impact on the climate. Climate shifts and changes naturally occur and always have. Many top scientist in the field firmly believe it is pure arrogance for man to think he has enough impact on a global scale to change the atmosphere on a level required to cause a climate shift.

One point I recall being made on this: If you took ALL of the oil and petroleum products burned/consumed by man in history (the last 150 years.... before that oil use was so little it was not measurable) the amount of oil would not fill Lake Tahoe. Go get a globe. Look at Lake Tahoe on that globe. that tiny little spec turned to gas of much higher volume and spread over a 100+ year time period.... you can see how it is a huge stretch to say we are impacting the atmosphere on a level to cause a global climate shift.

But it does make good politics. You can rile people up and get lots of money moving around the subject. It can be leveraged for power.

I think my cousin in Naples has a lot more to worry about than me. By the time it crosses the Everglades it'll probably just be a tropical storm. Now I just have to find a scared hottie to come curl up with me & ride me through the storm :)

I mean help me ride out the storm LOL

It is supposed to hit the east side of FL as a Cat 2, which is stronger then Katrina was when it rolled through So.Fl....If it hits south, I would be prepared....if it hits more Central Fl....you'll probably be alright....

Agree with the above post. Global warming should be re-named Increase In Global Temperature Paranoia To Further My Political Agenda.

Either way, I think William H has the plan figured out for this one at least!

Be safe down there boys (and girls).....

Hubbie Guy, I wouldn't be quite so caliver. Ivan was barely a Cat 3 when it hit Pensacola last year. In fact, the Weather People wanted to label it a Cat 2 storm. But, trust me, Ivan tore P-Cola apart.

Dennis, on the the other hand, was a Cat 3, but didn't do much damage.

I think the key is the size of the storm and how fast it moves. This is why Katrina and Ivan were so bad. Big, big, storms that took their time moving in.

Yes, I would definitely recommend a hottie (or two or three, the mind boggles). But I would also stay far, far away from underground parking garages and commercial office buildings.
