Any feelings on installing Hyperflow Catalytic Converters vs Ferrari Stock Catalytic Converters on a 1999 355. Price vs performance and value?

Stock cats will fail with unfortunate regularity. I just did Hyperflows (from Daniel at Ricambi) and the difference is marked. I have yet to hear or read of any failures with these units. Also, if they blew up every 5000 miles, the sound combined with a Tubi might make it worthwhile!

There's no reason at all to buy the stock cats for any F model vs the Hyperflows IMO -- the Hyperflows are:

    1. better made using an internal structure less prone to fracturing,

    2. use a more corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy (20% Cr vs 10% Cr) for the case & tubes, and

    3. are ~1/2 the price or less than the stock units.

It's an easy "no-brainer" ;) to pick the Hyperflows as the better value. The only way the stock units would be a better value would be if they were priced at 1/2~2/3 of the Hyperflows. The upper jpeg shows the "wound/round" Hyperflow internal structure for a TR cat and the lower jpeg shows the (less open area) ceramic internal structure for a stock TR cat:

This may seem like a dumb question, But has anyone had a smog check using the hyperflow cats + X-oust pipe. I'm getting kinda serious about purchasing the parts, and just want to avoid changing them every 2 years just to get past the California Smog Check.

Replaced OEM cats with Hyperflow last year (bought them from Daniel...he's the best!). Also have a Tubi exhaust. Just passed all smog inspections in Virginia recently. Did I mention that the car sounds GREAT (1996 355B 6-spd).

I have Hyperflows and a Tubi on my 348 in California - passes smog just fine which is kind of the point of running cats instead of test pipes. I've actually passed two smog checks - one when I got the car and another this year for rego.

    Cheers

Have them, love them, sound improved (already have Tubi), power (?) I think it is stronger but maybe it is just the sound. But, the sound!!!!! Passed California Smog test one week after having them installed. No problem at all. Get them.

Troy has the Hyper Flow cats designed to flow with in a few percent of a straight pipe. The metal matrix he uses absorbs little to no sound unlike the ceramic matrix cats. Flow plus sound plus legal numbers blown. What more would anyone want?
The F40 cats that we worked with Troy on, when installed blew ZERO's at the emission station (read the air out the tail pipe was cleaner that that in the waiting room at the station) with no loss of power. Actually it picked up a little torque as the turbo's liked the heat.
The 550 cats we are working on with Troy are an exceptional piece. He did his home work well on that system! Troy had those ready for marketing many months ago but would not offer them until completely tested and modified for ease of fitment. He left a good bit of money on the table in doing so but this is the level of product devolopement folks should be looking for!
There is absolutly no reason for straight pipes any longer unless its a race car.

One time purchase, lifetime fix (and then comes the disclaimer, "if the car is in good running order". Even the Hyper Flows can be burned up.)

What is the value of being legal?

I have the Hyper-flows on my 355. The sound difference alone is worth it. The engine seems to run a bit cooler, especially in traffic. Plus because they flow better there is a performance gain. I can't imagine why every 355 does not have these installed

More like $3200 but what price legal? In California, you wouldn't want to test it.

Yes it sucks for you guys in Ca with the CARB standards. Out here they are not as strict. My last Fcar I took to have emissions--Went inside and told the girl --- A---NO ONE is driving my car
B---It is too low to go on the dyno

She looked outside said "Wow a Ferrari"--here is your waiver see ya in 2 years...

OK = what are emissions? I live about 5 minutes from Thunder Valley Raceway, I laugh at some of the things people drive to the track sometimes.

Emissions testing is done to keep the air clean. Hook your car up to a machine to gather the exhaust gases emission. It's a freakin gimmick for the state to make money, basically. Here in MD , if your car is 25 years or older -you do NOT have to go thru emissions testing. What it boils down to is---
Some 90% of cars on the road are newer than 25 years old. BUT the majority of bad exhaust gas pollution comes from the 10% who do NOT have to go thru emissions---
So do we take $15 every two years from 10% of the bad cars or $15 from 90% of the good cars that pass anyway---you do the math!!
What's even funnier is I live 3 miles form St. Mary's County, MD--where they have NO emissions testing--WHY?? Because they are out of the Metro DC area far enough to not be effected..They are the southern most county in the state

I bought a set of test pipes from a maker in england for my 355 for $330 delivered off ebay. They are good quality with the only issue the drivers side pipe sensor is at an angle it almost rubs against the subframe, its very close.

A beautiful day in sunny CA - beautiful downtown Burbank to be exact. Smog check time, and I'm driving Rachel with Hyper-flows to my neighborhood smog maven. We get her nice and warm:) - - and go for it. Passed with flying colors! - and they are beautiful to look at too.

    Cheers, hank

BTW, just had Eugineo install my new X-OST system to the HP cats. The sound made me 18 again:)

    Cheers, Hank
