I am currently suffering a mental lapse where I am considering the purchase of a 1957 Lotus Eleven LeMans for vintage racing.

Can anyone help me recover from this affliction?

Sweet! Why is buying it a bad thing? I happen to think since racers are overhauled all the time anyway, the fact it's a Lotus is no big deal. You'll have a blast!

The legs were to prove that Loti are chick magnets.

You all are gobs of help. A poor guy is about to buy a British car and you tell him to Just Do It!

    That's a good one!

You've rekindled the interest I've always had in Elevens. Where have you been looking?

I've got a Lotus Mk 6 which is essentially the same car with a cycle fender body. The Eleven is a great car to drive, small bore sportscars are a hoot.

The Eleven is a reliable chassis, if this is a Climax engined car (which I assume it is), they're not cheap to rebuild, but they're reasonably rugged.

Go for it, have fun. I've had my Mk6 for 25 years and have spent very little on it. Vintage raced it for 10 years on two motors, brakes and a couple of sets of tires.

That's good to know. The race motor is actually a Coventry Climax FWE, which was originally in an Elite.

I was not actually looking, this one cuddled up to me leg and asked me to take it home.

If it checks out and is a good price, absolutely go for it!!! A sports racer like a Lotus XI is on my list of race cars to own some day. Vintage racing a small bore car like that is so much fun it ought to be illegal!

That car looks like a lot of fun actually. Is it street legal? You'll definitely get a lot of attention. I say go for it!

The Lotus Eleven was street legal when it was built. This one was a racecar all its life and was never registered on the street. It would be kinda fun to do though!

If you remove the fairing there is another seat in there so it could do a Mille Miglia type event.

I have decided to go for it. I made the offer. We'll see what happens.

    Good boy, well done.
Providing she is in fine fettle, she should be just about the fastest thing in her class. If you turn up for an event a chap called Robert Brooks is there though in his, kiss goodbye to the winners trophy Im afraid.

Oh my, that Coventry motor is a very needy piece of machinery. They need FREQUENT rebuilds as a street motor let alone a racer. Check with the usual (Lotus) sources for parts if you're not already aware what's available and what isn't.
