So I was/am thinking of trading my 2003 575M F1 for a 2007/8 599. Prices have dropped considerably on the 599's while the 575's are relatively stable. The price gap has gotten close enough to make the trade enticing for me.
So i took my 1st test drive today in a pristine 599 2007 with 6k miles. Car looks brand new inside and out and had ceramic brakes.
Now on paper on know the car is leaps and bounds better then the 575 in every department. So going in, I was expecting a real Wow factor!
My initial feelings of the 599 were certainly the car feels more comfortable, more modern in and out, braking was amazing, and gear shifts seem 3x faster.
However, The car didn't seem overly dramatically that more impressive!? The 599 had stock exhaust compared to my 575 which has tubis and straight pipes so the sound was a bit lack luster in comparison.
Am I crazy? I know the 599 will spank my 575 but it just didn't feel that way. Maybe the exhaust sounds of my car and the banging of my gear shifts on the slower F1 psychologically makes it feel quicker.
The 575 is definitely very powerful and the pulling force in 3rd and 4th gears is amazing.
Perhaps if I was coming from a 1986 testarossa and driving the 599 I would be overwhelmed with the differences in power, technology and performance?
At the end of the day if the pricing on the trade/purchase makes sense, logically I might make the jump based on overall modern advantages etc....
So, has anyone else had similar experiences or am I just utterly delusional?

    Leo

A few months ago I saw myself in front of a similar decision. Should I buy a 599 as a sportive addition to my 456M GT? I briefly summarize: I've decided to skip the generation 599. No doubt about, the 599 is a great car, but as you described, the "whow effect" is missing, "the spark does not jump over". I guess with the F12 the situation very soon will look different.
In my case, the "sportive addition" now is a Scuderia.

To me the styling would make this an easy decision.....the 599 is so much more beautiful than the 550/575, quite possibly the best looking V12 f car since the 60ies.

I happen to feel that the styling of the 599 is seriously flawed and will not age well both stylistically as well as financially. FAKE body additons [i.e. flying butresses] to disguise the fact it looks like a corvette with its glass hatchback will not stand the test of time.
I, plus many well regarded publications, think the 550-575 will become a classic Ferrari in the years ahead. The 599 not so.

I am mixed on the looks. I like the looks of the 599 and the 575. Each to me repesents totally different feelings. The 575 in my opinion is still a classic style GT but has just enough of the modern technology whereas the 599 is in your face modern in every way.
I feel the 575 is like a modern day Daytona, even today when I look at the 575 it seems to hit all the right cues for a "traditional Grand Touring Car". The 599 jumps into the the new generation of modern day cars and not sure what it looks like.
I suspect if I had made my post in the 599 section I would be blasted?
When I took my 1st drive in the 575 I was in complete shock. I couldnt believe the all the power and how just overall incredible the car was.. I couldnt stop thinking about it and was relentless in my pursuit to secure one. The 599, well, I stop thinking about by the time I went to bed last night. Not so say I wouldnt purchase one if the situation is really right..Being a bigger guy 6'-4", the GT style cars fit my most comfortably so I am a bit limited in my choice of cars.
Yes, the F12 will be the WOW factor for sure! 575 to 599 (take it or leave it) 575 to F12 (should be EPIC!)
So skipping the 599 may be the case, the problem is, I dont know when I will be able to afford the F12 if ever?

I totally agreed. I have owned 360, 430, 575, california, and 599 but no other ferraris meet classic and modern ferrari beauty standard at the same time but 599. F12 is too digital and too much in designwise,,,,when i was invited by Ferrari and went to Italy to unveil F12 in spring, I was so disappointed by the front design but rear is qute good. 575 I love side view but headlights are,,,,,, 550 is much better than 575 imho if i have to forgive the headlights,,,,,

I totally agree! When the 550/575 came out it looked great, today it looks better given all the "Fake" body additions and modernations on the new F Cars etc..In another 10 years, I think it will really shine...Again, to me it most closely reflects the Daytona design which is timeless!

2 Front Engine V-12's? Really? Could be overkill?

Any other suggestions for a 6'-4" guy?

Maybe wait a few more years and purchase a well priced 458 to balance the stable?

The good thing is that you can take your time. Plenty of 599s around and their price are only going down.

I have both presently but waiting for one or other to sell. Both have their plus points but the 599 is much more dramatic. In the end I agree with a recent EVO article that compared older V12s plus 550,575 and 599 - they reckon the 575 is the pick of the bunch with the performance more accessible than the 599's

    I have done 550, 575, and 599. I have decided to keep the 550 Barchetta and 599.

Whilst the 575 has some useful improvements over the 550, a manual 550 ( and I had a manual 575) is one of the sweetest cars ever, almost perfect.

599 is a huge jump over 575, now I now styling is subjective, but the 599 gets positive comments all the time. The 550 or 575 never from the fairer sex, they think it ugly, and it is the boys that talk of the rugged good looks. It is a Supra to the rest of the world. I have had 2 458's which to the world is a stunning design, yet my 599 gets far far greater positive comments. Yes the nose is heavy, but it is a lovely elegant GT. It has aged well. In fact, I hate the F12, and decided to keep the 599. Hey looks of cars are subjective...

The 599 has an epic engine, the F1 box is ok, though it probably needs the ecu from the hgte to be really ok in years to come. Styling appreciated generally, and for me is a no brainer over a 575 F1.

I love my 599 as much as the 550 Barchetta but would never go for a 575 again unless it was the super america

I am interested you in reply. I think you truly have the best of both worlds. An open top Classic V12 GT that is gated and a XBox Game station styled 599 :) I dont think it gets better than that, and in your case there is certainly no need for a 575. I absouletly love the Barchetta and Super America, but give the edge to the Barchetta.
Yes, styling is subjective agreed. 550/575/599 are all stunning for what each represents. The 599 and 458 are now of the new modern/digital/edgy style which I can appreciate it.
In terms of comparing the 575/599 for me, there is no way near enough of a jump in power etc. Now if you are tracking or racing the two then of course 599. As for living in NYC and driving in the tri-state area, i will never need or really feel the difference enough.
My reaction from the (General Public) is generally something like this: WOW, I LOVE your car! Is that brand new? The reaction would almost be the same wether I had a 575/599. The sounds, the Ferrari Shields, the large prancy horse in the rear...Its a Ferrari (A good looking one at that) and that is all the public really knows..I have NEVER had ANYONE compare it to a supra(?)
In fact when I test drove the 599 I asked my wife what she thought and her 1st question was "What are the plastic wings on the sides?" I think one person summed it up perfectly "FAKE body additons [i.e. flying butresses] to disguise the fact it looks like a corvette with its glass hatchback will not stand the test of time."
Listen, I like boths cars completely and would most definetely consider a 599 if an excellent opportunity presents itself, but for now the 575 is way more then adequate for my needs.

He always starts that way, just his style.

He owned a 550 for a very long time from what I understand.

I think it came up for sale last year.
