    Dear Ferrari Life members,

Sorry to write this thread that is off topic. However, I aspire to be a self-made and successful businessman like yourselves and eventually own a Ferrari. Ferrari ownership has been a dream of mine since childhood.

I was wondering if some member of Ferrari Life would take me under the wing so I can become a successful businessmen like them. I have read and studied business theory. However, I would like to put the theory into practice. I currently work as a manager for a landscaping company. As far as upward mobility, I have reached the pinnacle at this small company. I also intend on attending business school so I need successful work experience. Work experience is essential for admission, especially if I plan on attending UCLA’s Anderson or USC’s Marshall School of Business. I have the work ethic and academic capacity to succeed but I am lacking in the work experience. Therefore, I hope you can provide me with this opportunity. Compensation is not the most important factor. I have a Bachelors Degree in Economics with a 3.67 GPA. I graduated as the top student in the Economics Department. If you decide that you are not interested in an apprentice and you know of other successful business men/women that might me interested could you please refer me to them or vise versa. Thank you for reading this post. I live in southern California. Well, I live in Chino, Ca which is about 35 miles east of Los Angeles.

    -Robert

Uhm, wow. Not really the best first post but sure....

    A) ferrari ownership != success

    B) Surely you must know someone in Chino, and if you don't, find a business you like and approach the principals

    C) What kind of business? Find the passion, not the $

    D) This isn't ferrari life - so way to cut and post.

    E) Surely soemone in your econ dept where you clearly did well has thoughts / recommendations, especially someone whom you connected with

    F) Are you serious?

Be aware, when Trump takes on a crew of potential apprentices, they pay for that opportunity with public humiliation, which generates content for his show that helps his PR and top line.

Here are a few free lessons.

People come on here to relax and talk about cars and with other car people. Registering on the same day and posting about business and asking for a fairly significant favor as a complete unknown signaled a number of things:

    - You see Ferraris primarily as a status symbol, which attitude is actually a negative to many on this site
    - You didn't classify the situation properly and follow through with the appropriate behavior for that situation
    - You don't do good groundwork (scout out the situation, gather info, create a plan, follow through on the plan)
    - You didn't identify a potential mentor's motivations and consequently weren't able to frame it as an appealing proposition
    - You're a hair sloppy ("Ferrari Life" and "vise versa" were site/typographic errors)

These signals would cause a potential mentor to at least hesitate.

Here are a few more freebies (that could have been found with "search")

Think about these things and it should leave you better off than before.

Actually, if the poster has the single ingredient that matters the most, he doesn't need this forum, or any other...

Years ago, I saw an interview with Schwarzenegger...Ahhn-old's response to the question "What is the biggest difference between people you've seen who 'made it' vs. didn't" was: "They were hungrier"...

Translation: If you're really serious/interested in doing something biz oriented, keep your eyes open and stay hungry...opportunities are all around you, and in some respects, it doesn't really matter what the biz is, just whether it's something that appeals to you and has a realistic possibility of going somewhere.

As possible 'practice', I'd recommend that in your day-to-day life, you activity assess businesses you encounter. For example, when going into a restaurant, look around, see how it operates, see how YOU'd do sumpin' different to improve things. I'm not in the restaurant biz, but have an interest in good operations, and I see crap all of the time when I'm dining out.

Sometimes, you can learn more from watching a business that sucks, and is still in business in spite of how poorly it's run...

Warren Buffet has said something to the effect that Bill Gates woulda been successful in any business, not just the 'puter biz.

I am hungry. That is why I am posting these threads. I don't know anyone in Chino that is successful. Chino is not a suburb nor an industrial park. As far as businesses go, there are few and far in between. I came to Ferrari Chat for the purpose of finding a successful entrepreneur to take me under their guidance so I can put my business theory into practice and eventually blossom professionally. I am not looking to free load. I will work for minimum wage. I will drive anywhere in the OC or LA County. I need this successful entrepreneur to help me with these tasks and eventually help me with professional recommendations so I can attend business school – top tier business school. To attend a top business school there is an unspoken rule: it is not what you know, but who you know. As far as my professors, they helped me get the job I currently have. They will also help me with my academic recommendations. They advised me to find a successful business men/women because the small business I work for with not provide me with the proper work experience required for admission at a top tier business school. Sorry if I offended anyone. I have a plan to attend business school and specialize in finance or capital markets. Without proper work experience I can not began my plan. I sustained my share of humiliation. I worked full time and attended college at night. Despite this I had no money to purchase food. So I attended class hungry with my stomach grueling. I sold my textbooks for clothes. Enough of this, I am not looking for pity. Ylshih you don’t have a clue of who I am or what I have gone through so don’t assume. Ferrari is a status symbol whether people are offended or not. I decided on this site because I share something in common with the members of this site: a passion for Ferrari.

Ok, so you're hungry; that's good.

If Chino ain't got it, time to move to the big city, so head on into L.A. The reason no one in Chino is rich is cuz you either don't know them, or they all left, cuz there ain't much there. Nothing wrong with that, just ain't for you.

As far as 'who you know, who you blow' as the only way to get into the 'right' school, that's crap.

    So, more suggestions:

    * IF you have a particular MBA-ish type school in mind(say, USC), then time for a visit to them in person. Talk to whomever heads up MBA admissions, talk to whomever is dept. head in the area in which you're interested. Wear a suit(that fits and has been cleaned recently). Get a haircut. Show you mean business and are there NOT to waste their time.

You'd probably be surprised how many well-to-do types came from the wrong side of the tracks and the school of hard knocks. With those guys, -nothing- makes as good of an impression as someone who's got it together and is ready to GO.

Bachelor's degree is good for two purposes: 1) get you the job interview...or... 2) Prereq for grad school. Everything else doesn't really matter much.

    * You need to narrow down your range of interests - "I wanna get rich in Biz" is way too general.
You tawkin' mgmt? Finance? Marketing? Sumpin' else?

Hell, if I were young, just wanted to make some cash, I'd consider(believe it or not) going to work at a McDonalds, learn the biz, get a stash together, then buy a franchise. Seems like a cash cow to me. Easy? Well, probably not, but is doable. Ten year plan, you're in good shape. Couple local guys here in my area opened a Sonic drive-in about 20 yrs ago. Now they have a bunch of 'em, gotta be worth lots of $millions$ now.

Keep the 'school' thing in perspective; maybe you need it, maybe not. Lots o' MBAs out there that are not rich, so ain't for everybody.

    * Try some guidance counseling, narrow down your interests...'getting rich' is not an interest, it's a result.

    * Keep poking around for leads. Maybe this board helps, maybe it doesn't. One fewer place to look.
Often times the winner wins cuz they eliminated all the wrong things, and what was left worked.

    * How much time do you have in mind? 5 yrs? Not gonna happen(probably). 10 yrs? Now, you're getting more realistic. Probably not too many rich types on Fchat that got it done by age 25; those that are really young are probably more lucky/fortunate than really brilliant(altho they'd likely not agree with this statement :) ). Yeah, the right occupation will really help, but luck also helps, too.

    * Hell, go be a dentist; I read the other day they make more than doctors, cuz of HMO's killing the medical profession.

So, keep pluggin' away, every choice looked at will either be viable or one less choice to consider.

Doesn't that essentially underscore the point about the nature of your request as contrasted to the limited extent of our knowledge about you or interest in you? We're all on the internet and total strangers, for the most part, to each other. If you're going to ask for something that 99+% of people would require at the bare minimum limited acquaintanceship before they would consider it, your path of highest probability success would be to establish yourself with that status before making the request.

A letter or note of self-introduction doesn't really achieve that status. All it does is create a first impression and I gave you how that first impression came across to me. It could come across differently to others and it could be a wrong first impression; but first impressions are hard to overcome. So better to create the right first impression from the start. This is another freebie.

    ylshih,

Can you become my guidance counselor. I need help and that is why I came to this thread. To duplicate success, you have to emulate it first. I am a recent college graduate. I don’t know anyone successful. The company I work for will not provide me with the appropriate work experience because my duties are simple. The business is simple so is the finance and most other aspects. There are only 4 employees – three of which are full time. ylshih how should I approach this? I need help. I want to attend business school but without professional recommendations I will not get into the school of my dreams. I have worked hard academically and professionally to get thru college. I have sacrificed much.

No, what time I have to spend giving guidance is taken up with current responsibilities or with my 2c on this board in general or specific as the topic interests me.

There are plenty of people here, such as AMA328 has done on this thread, that do the same; so if you are known and your approach is thoughtful and courteous you are likely to get what you are asking. My best suggestion is to

    1) subscribe to Silver ($15/year) and gain access to the B&I forum (this site may be one of the best non-specific mentoring sites on the web)
    2) search topics here about how to find careers/jobs, getting started in life, managing personal finances, etc (there's a large archive of good topics and advice already here that doesn't need to be repeated, do your part by doing your own research)
    3) relax and make yourself known as someone other than "brash and hungry" (people are going to spend more time answering if they find you interesting as a person)
    4) after having spent a week or two reading and searching through topics, post specific questions that are immediately relevant to you and that you can act on (you're not going to learn about success in life from one person or in one thread or in one week)

    Robert,

I've watched this post develop all morning and it dawned me that you have already made up your mind that "nothing exists in Chino". One thing you need to do is keep an open mind. If you go to the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce website and go to the directory, then check under the "M" section for manufacturing, you will see that there are MANY privately owned manufacturing companies in Chino. One in particular is a lighting company that has been in business for about 50 years. You might want to contact the Chamber of Commerce and ask them for advise on which companies might be interested in a mentoring program for a college bound student....

You need to be creative and expand your thoughts on what you want to be when you grow up and how you are going to accomplish those goals:)

    Good luck!!

Sure, if you believe in competition. Then you may be operating from your ego, which is a non-existent image of yourself.

Absolutely. I rotate between so many books they all sound alike. Coincidence that all lead to the same conclusion?

Which leads me to my next suggestion for our friend Robert, start READING more than the textbooks. What you are seeking in the business of life is already within yourself. Now it's a matter of exposing that wealth...

    Said best,
The "safety net" college once provided is slowly fading out of relevancy, let alone much of the information. The 'game' changes a lot faster today than these expensive 4+ year cycles. Can anyone predict the next year? But some people still need college... because there is no one-size-fits-all standard for everybody, and that's OK too. Some people just pick it up quicker than the rest...

If I were to offer one book, here it is.... http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Right-Thought-Divinity-Desire/dp/0895403110 & if you don't understand it the first time around, that's why you own it. If you regret your buying decision in any shape or form, I'll buy it off you. But I'm pretty sure you won't. Give yourself the fair chance to read this with an open-mind..

Out of curiosity, what college did you graduate from? 3.67 GPA and you were in the top of your class?
Anderson and Marshall are good schools, have you taken the GMAT yet?

    OC Speed Junkie,

I graduated from California State University, San Bernardino. I was accepted into UCLA but my parents could not help me pay for it. My education was funded 50 percent by my full time work and the other 50 percent was academic scholarships. As far as the GMAT, I have not taken it. Nor have I applied to Marshall or Anderson yet because I don't have much work experience. I was in the top 6-7 percent of my graduating class. I was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Theta Kappa, both are prestigious honor societies. I graduated top of my class in the economics department.

Just FYI there are members here from Chino who own Ferraris.

And also FYI, the GMAT has a verbal section (I just got back from taking it actually), so you might want to brush up on that.

Oh, and one of my best friends is currently attending Wharton, and knew absolutely no one when he applied.

Be careful what assumptions you make.
