So, I'm watching the Indy quali....and there is Derek Daley sticking a microphone in people's faces. This guy is the absolute worst interviewer ever. He is Mr. Negative. He always asks negative questions. I swear if he interviewed Roger Penske his first question would be: Congratulations on putting a car on pole. Do you feel your lack of success in Formula one has hurt your legacy? Why do they keep this idiot on TV? Anyone know?
I agree. I don't know if at times he thinks he's being sarcastic/funny, but it's not coming off that way.
He's always been universally horrid. Can't quite fathom why as he was in F1. I detest the Sky rugby/F1 host also, but at least he has a reason for being clueless.
Virtually all of the commercials on the Indy coverage are pretty stupid, too. Poor Mario, doing those moronic Go Daddy ads. I get a chuckle out of the Verizon ads, though. "If you were a race driver ..." We couldn't get the local newspapers to even mention rallyes, back in the '70s.
Mario can't even say "Bon Journo" properly! I agree, he looks really bad in those spots. But, they don't sponsor a bikini model any more so Mario has to fill in.
And what's up with poor Bob Jenkins? The guy constantly wants to interject historical references but botches them up 100% of the time. When the announcers no doubt have media guides right in front of them for reference, Jenkins obviously ignores them stating some vague historic reference as fact only to be corrected by some production guy in the truck who corrects him ten seconds later. In one instance Sunday, Jenkins fumbled over facts, jumbled all the words up, tried to save himself as though he had marbles in his mouth as they were fading to a commercial break, one of his colleagues said "Easy for you to say Bob". You may almost hear the production guys in the truck tearing their hair out. When is NBCS finally going to wake up and put Robin Miller in the seat? For historic references, there is no one better.
That would be AWESOME! But they'd need more than a 7-second delay to keep from pissing off to many powers that be...
I've said it a million times. Bob is a super nice guy and 10-15 years ago he was on top of his game, but now....it's just....bad. It's time for Bob to hang it up and just enjoy coming to the races and leave the announcing to someone better suited. I like how Robin Miller is being utilized now. Color Commentary. I don't know he'd do that well as the main commentator, though.
No, Jenkins needs to go now. Put Miller in the seat with Beechus and Dallenbach, it would be a lot more fun. Jenkins is a train wreck. Just think, in most of our lifetimes, we've endured Economacky the carnival barker, Page the baffoon, Arute the wordy swarmy gadabout and now bumbling Jenkins. And they wonder why IndyCar dosent draw ratings? BHW
I have never heard an interview from anyone that is actually worth the air time they get. The misguided perception is that a correspondent who has 'on-track' racing experience will make them better or more receptive and nothing could be further from the truth. These correspondents are paid and hell I would do it for free! Some may not agree with my way of doing things but when I tell you something it is the honest truth!
Well, it appears Bob is done after the race this may. Last night at the Old Timers banquet, he announced that he would be leaving broadcasting at the end of May. His wife has been diagnosed with brain cancer and he needs to be with her.
I think the quartet of Mike Joie, Jeremy Shaw, Wally Dallenbach Jnr and Calvin Fish (in the pitlane) would work well....maybe borrow Jerry Punch to help Cal out...can't help thinking Sunday's SPEED coverage won't quit be like that!! E
That's too bad. Would certainly explain why he seems so distracted on the air. My sister died of the same thing a few years ago and I know what my brother-in-law went through. BHW
