Somebody (ahem) should have posted this picture hours ago. Here's what a hillbilly 348 twin disc clutch looks like when it fails. TOOTHLESS! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
didn't PAP have something like that a while back , but his was only missing something like 4/5 fingers ? why do they break like that ? weird. .
Yep. I had 6 busted pressure plate diaphram fingers. Ferrarifixer was under the assumption that the pressure plate fingers were being over-exerted and breaking. I was more inclined to think it is just plain wear and tear. I have the COMPLETE service history with my car. It has had 4 major services(major due again now) done every 3 years. Every major, the 2 clutch plates have been replaced with new. The T/O bearing was replaced once back in 2002. Not when the major was done. There has been no mention of a the pressure plate being replaced. Although it may have been in the clutch kit and was replaced every major? Im not 100% sure. There was a Japanese guy who posted around the same time with his broken fingers similiar to mine. He didnt break as many and his was the original AP Racing clutch kit/pressure plate too. When mine started feelin' funny, I found 3 fingers broken. Thank God the plate is ok so it can be rebuilt!
When mine packed it, I just had trouble finding gears one afternoon while driving. I went to my brothers 4 days later take it for another drive and couldnt get any gears at all. I had a feeling that I had either collapsed or broken fingers. Its done now........better than ever.
Time to let Daniel off the hook. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=136182019&postcount=3
Thanks for letting us in on this info. BTW.........are you related to Al Snow the WWE wrestler by any chance?
Inmy 16 years with the 348 it has ditched pressure plate teeth twice. Both times I could never find the teeth...and mine were only missing one tooth each time.
Thanks for the clarification. Why is your clutch a "hillbilly" twin plate clutch?? Its the stock AP clutch isnt it?
Here in the southern United States, a toothless country boy who lives in the hills would be termed a "hillbilly". It was a play on the loss of pressure plate teeth, and the fact that resnow knows where the Hillbilly Hideaway in North Carolina actually can be found. Don't you have a similar derogatory word for folks like that Down Under?
He's ruthless & toothless!! The 348 sales brochure should have said "counter-measures - standard option". Want to get rid of that pesky ricer on your @ss? Jam a gear!!! My name's not Dave today.....it's Earl Hickey!
Increased pedal pressure effort at the end of the pedal travel (instead of more pressure and then less as it goes over center), inability to completely disengage the clutch, resulting in difficulty engaging 1st or reverse from rest. Initially, I thought it was clutch haydraulics going away on a customer's car, but the pedal didn't feel right. I used to think like ferrarifixer, that there was a pedal travel stop that wasn't set right and it was overextending, but now I think it's just a certain number of "cycles" of operation. They are all now thirteen to eighteen years old...
It felt just like Lolaman described. After 2-3 shifts, it was difficult to change gears because the clutch wasn't fully disengaging. After 4-5 more shifts, there was no action, the pedal bottomed out. It was impossibe to change gears with the car standing still. When I opened it up, all but one finger had broken off and all had fresh breaks. The one finger remaining was blue from heat and distorted; it broke off with no effort. Also, the roll pin in the thrust bearing that rides inside the gooved guide was sheared off flush with the surface of the cast thrust bearing housing. The two preload coil springs were loose inside the housing (along with the 17 broken fingers) indicating that after all the pressure plate fingers broke off, there was nothing to stop the thrust bearing from sliding off its flange, shearing the pin as I pumped hell out of the clutch pedal. bob
