I dont know what the hell I am thinking. I previously went to school for a bachelors in mechanical engineering. I never really used it - ended up doing computer work for 10 years and then started my own business. I've been doing that for the past maybe 8 years now.

I finished college YEARS ago - gawd, what was it... maybe 15 years now?

And today I enrolled in a local college. In their degreed culinary arts program.

There are three things I want to know how to do well in life. I want to be a fantastic cook. A great photographer. And I want to be able to play an instrument (sax or piano). It will probably take me a few years to finish the program because it's regular school, not night classes, so I will need to arrange time from work to be able to complete it.

I haven't set foot in a school in YEARS. I will be the oldest one there!

But I am really genuinely pleased with myself and happy. I am starting a journey to do something I always wanted to do. I have zero intention of ever working as a professional chef. I just LOVE cooking and want to be on a professional level, even if my day job is my business.

So is that nuts or what? Once I am done I intend to go into a degreed liberal arts program for photography.

    Life is short :)

I think you are going to love it. I graduated a few years ago and in order to do so, I had to take 12 credit hours of anything that the college offered. (ANYTHING!) So I had 12 hours and I could take anything I always wanted to take, but couldn't due to getting a degree.

The first class I took was astronomy. It was fantastic. Learning about the current theories of how the universe came to be, how it will die out. Using our universities powerful telescope to be able to see Saturn's rings in perfect detail. Just fascinating stuff to me. Our professor was a TA who was taking a job at NASA the next fall and so he was a young guy and would take us out for drinks after major tests.

Second class I took was a Severe and Hazardous Weather course. Wow, what a great class. Learned how to predict the weather based on daily readings. The different kinds of thunderstorms, how hurricanes form, where in a storm a tornado is most likely to form. Learning to read weather patterns and learn how to read all the various tools of a meteorologist and how to spot oncoming thunderstorms. It was great!

I also took a intro entomology course simply because I have always been fascinated with insects and bugs.

And last I took a sculpting class cause I always wanted to explore my creative side which until then had always been supressed due to my family's pressure to focus on the "money making" skills such as math and business.

I share the passion to cook with you Mike, and I would love to take it to the next level as you have. I'd really like to know more of what I'm doing and how to make my own creations for other's to enjoy. Cooking is very relaxing to me and I want to make it more into a science than guesswork and following recipes.

I also have a strong passion for macrophotography. I like taking pictures of ants. A good friend of mine takes some amazing up close pictures of ants and other bugs. Alex Wild - www.myrmecos.net

I hate to say this, but your reasons for going to college I wish would mimic the reasons of today's youth. Instead of going to learn, they go because they have to.

    Goood Luck!

I worked as a cook for 6 years throughout high school and college. I can tell you I enjoy cooking a lot more now that it is for myself and not for customers. I will let you in on a secret to cooking, it doesn't have to be complicated, just make things you think taste good. That is the secret to being a good cook, well that and don't overcook meats..

Nothing is more rewarding than going to school for your personal enrichment and to LEARN. Honestly, too many people go to college just to get a diploma, not caring what they are actually learning.

I have long wanted to go to culinary school and arts/photography institute. Time, money, and needing a "regular" degree took priority. I just graduated college and got my real estate sales license. Now comes the task of finding a job that can afford me to go to night school for things I ultimately want to learn about.

Good for you and best of luck!

PS. To show up all your culinary students, if the professor asks "does anyone know what all the different ridges in a chef's hat symbolize?" You can now answer "all the different ways an egg can be prepared."

I went back last year to take a single class that just peaked my interest. I thought I was going to be the oldest in there as well and ended up not even being near the oldest. It was fun and I always look through the course book the local JC sends to see if there is something else out there I can learn more about.

    Have Fun!

LOL....I'm with you there, brutha! I'm taking classes for a Masters in Engineering currently - I haven't seen Trig/Calculus in over 12 years.....some folks in my class haven't seen Mathematics in over 20 years.....going back to school after a long sabbatical is tough. Although, I have noticed, people seem to 'collect' college degrees here in New England like some people collect stamps.
