I worked on the V-22 Osprey program at two different times at Boeing Helicopter just outside of Philadelphia: 1984-1986 (on industry-assist from Grumman) and 1993-1994 (as a contract engineer). But up until yesterday, the only one I had ever seen up close is the prototype on display at a museum in West Chester, PA, and the only ones I had ever seen fly were a couple that flew over Marietta, at a fairly high altitude, in transit to other places.

After all this time, I caught an Osprey (two, actually) at the somewhat rainy Wings Over North Georgia airshow in Rome, GA. These were Marine MV-22Bs operated by VMM-365 out of MCAS New River, NC.

In the afternoon, while it was still raining a bit, its mate taxiied out to do its airshow performance. This included both vertical and short takeoffs and landings, a high-speed pass, and flying backwards and sideways and turning 360 degrees in place.

In spite of the somewhat nasty weather, I was glad that I had made the trip! It didn't bother me that I decided not to wait around for the F-22 Raptor performance that was to close the show, delayed by yet another rain shower.

Those things are loud. You can hear them 5 miles out. Great airplane, and safe enough now that even POTUS flies on them.

Thanks for those great and rare pics! That is a bit of an ungainly aircraft, no? But it does what it was designed to do, so I guess it's like Dan Gurney's line about never seeing an ugly racing car in Victory Lane!

    Great pictures!

I finally saw a pair of them "in the wild" during my trip to Myrtle Beach a couple weeks back.

Oddly? I was laying out at the pool reading a Dale Brown book that mentions that aircraft. :)

While they are loud in hover they can be extremely quiet in forward flight.

We were treated to a XV15 "private show" at BHTI during a Heli Expo one year and I was shocked at how quiet it was when it was doing the fly by's...

Interestingly, while I was working at Boeing in 1985, they brought one of the XV-15s in to give the employees a little demo to show the concept of what they were working on. So until Sunday, that was the only tilt-rotor demo I had ever seen, 30 years earlier.

    Gatorrari, great stuff: thanks!

What part(s) of the Osprey did you work on? I know someone who was in structures who worked on the 41 section (the part of the fuselage forward of the wing :) )

    Jacob :)

just got a shot of an osprey as the presidents convoy flew over my house. convoy is probably not the correct term for aircraft? such a cool sight to one of these flying.
