Today I had the Dino out running errands. I was at Advanced Auto picking up some headlight bulbs for my Pilot. One of the more talky workers told me he liked my "cute little Volkswagen." I smiled and said: "Thanks".
That is a major compliment, since he was obviously thinking of that gorgeous and svelte automotive icon, the Karman Ghia.
Uro- In the mid-70s I drove a 1972 Dino 246 GT from Poughkeepsie, NY to Clovis, NM. Nobody had a clue what it was, even after I told them it was a Ferrari. Never heard of the name. At least if you had told them it was a Ferrari, a small dim light would have illuminated in their deeply buried brains. I hope. Could be worse. Taz Terry Phillips
A mechanic buddy of mine went with me to check out the Ford GT at the dealership a few years ago. One of the salesmen asked if my 308 Was a Karman Ghia. I've also had two people ask me if it was a Mustang, and two others who asked if it was a "kit car."
I have had my Dino (FIAT version) mistaken for a Vette twice now. How they can mistake that small car for a big car does not make sense to me. Although my fav was a guy asking me how much I liked my half Daytona, I looked at him very confused...he said Ferrari motor in the front, half the cylinders, half the carburetors and all the looks of a Daytona. I took him for a spirited ride as a Thank You for making my day. Uro, did you ever think that maybe he thought you were driving a Kelmark ? Pretty sure they were VW based
Wow, the resemblance is uncanny...! Thanks for that, I learned something new today (and it's still pretty early!) Here's a short Wikipedia article about Kelmark in case anyone (besides me) never heard of them.
