Since I don't have a lift in my garage yet, I went to a Ferrari maintenance shop today to have the oil changed of the engine and gearbox. As we pulled the (magnetic) plug out of the transfer case (I guess that's what the case around the three gears that transfer power from the engine to the gearbox is called), a whole bunch of metal bits were stuck to it. Opening up the case revealed that two teeth of the central gear had broken off. Close examination of the other gears revealed only VERY minor damage. Dropping the gearbox bottom cover revealed NO damage or debris there. I don't want to think of what could have happened if these bits would have started wandering around the transfer case and -worse- gearbox We've got our annual Holland/Belgium FChat meeting next Saturday, and I am without car right now Transfer gear is on order from England and should be here tomorrow or Friday. We could still make it.... So glad I decided to change the gearbox oil.... Hans P.S. How do these gears break anyway????
Nice job Hans, catching that one before potential disaster! Probably fatigue caused the teeth to break off? Cheers!
