Every single day, once or twice per day, my computer will just completely freak out. The pointer goes all over the place, opening different files and folders, adjusting the toolbar's size, closing applications, etc. It lasts for maybe 10 seconds, and during that time, I have absolutely no control over what is going on. Once it's done, I have to go and readjust everything to the way it was.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Footnote; I run Norton every single day, as well as Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware. Every time I run Norton, it finds 4 files as threats, yet it can never delete or quaranteen them.

Just a wild ass guess..... I remember a long time ago Window's had some macro features that you could set up to record and replay mouse and keyboard activities. It was kinda fun to set it up and watch the computer to go crazy..... It sounds like maybe something similar that is set to go at particular times, you have any practical jokers in the office?

Out of everyone who works with me, nobody would have the know how to mess around with macros.

It's a Dell desktop with a typical basic Dell mouse.

Operating system is Windows 2000 Professional.

I don't think I am using intellipoint software, but am not sure.

Well that is queer. I wonder if Mark might be right about the bored coworker. I'd try removing any mouse-related software from "add/remove programs", then remove the mouse from device manager, then physically unplug it and reboot with no mouse. Then shutdown again, plug in the mouse and boot up.

How about remote access? Maybe it's called remote desktop?

Could it be someone fiddling with his computer using that Windows remote access software? That would be a real ball buster thing to do.

It's built in now, right? Just have to activate it, and away you go. As long as you know the IP address of the computer in question, you could do it from anywhere, not just the office, but off site too.

I think you can disable it.

Here's what Microsoft has to say.

    "To disable Remote Desktop
    Click 'System' in Control Panel.
On the Remote tab, clear the 'Allow users to connect remotely to your computer' check box, and then click 'OK.'

    Notes

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to disable the Remote Desktop feature.
To open a Control Panel item, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon. "

Easiest way to find out would be to pull the network connection as soon as it starts to happen.

Actually, when it happens, it moves much faster than any human being can. Also, I checked my user setting and could not find anywhere for remote access.

No offense meant at all by saying this, but it sounds hilarious.

    Hope you fix the problem.

It is certainly the craziest thing I have ever seen happen on a computer.

It certainly acts as if it were possessed.

I think it may have something to do with the 4 files that show up in a Norton scan that cannot be removed. Some kind of spyware.

    Absolutely NOT.

While it does have some residual value, Microsoft is now in bed with those pesky gator guys now. Please, don't do this.

Also, this is not a spyware issue. Typically a driver issue. Mind if we setup a webex conference sometime this evening to take a look at it? If so, drop me a line with a good time and your phone number & email address.

Try running Norton in Safe Mode to see if you can delete those files. If not, write down the file names, then boot off of your Windows 2000 CD. Go into Recovery Console, then delete the files (i.e. del filename.exe). Hopefully that will work. If not, try removing most of your startup items from the registry and the Start Menu (Start>Programs>Startup). If you need help navigating your registry or with anything else feel free to ask.

    Dayam that's some good stuff.

So, kizdan, any luck? I didn't see any reply to my suggestion. It is pretty easy and it will likely resolve a problem with a corrupted or improperly installed driver.

I think it just may be the mouse. The last time the computer freaked out, I lifted my mouse from the pad, and it seemed to stop. I think it's time for a new mouse!

The obvious course of action is to switch mouses with one of your coworkers and not tell them. LOL
