It went zomething like zis "saab AND volvo owners know the difference between fantasy, reality, and safety blah blah blah blah"

Here are my real world observations (mostly Volvo, not much Saab):

Volvo drivers are living in a fantasy world when it comes to the posted speed limit. They fear even approaching said limit, much less exceed it. 10% or more BELOW the limit is where they drive.

Volvo drivers are living in a fantasy world when they think all the lanes on the highway are for equal speeds. Here in California, we drive faster on the #1 lane (that's the one on the far left for you Volvo drivers). Volvo's always seem to hang in the #1 lane at the -10+% posted speed. I usually have to drive in the slow lane to even match the posted speed LIMIT when a Volvo driver is within a 5 mile radius.

Volvo drivers (one has hit me in just the last 6 months (in the Range rover - no damage to me mucho to them. They rear ended me talking on cell phone) are in a fantasy world that when they buy their car (based on safety) that they can go on and live their distracted life behind the wheel. Talking on cell phones, playing with nav's, doing makeup, staring at kids in back seats all while moving at -10% or more BELOW posted limit.... :)

OK, not all Volvo drivers are distracted butterflies, but, it is HUGELY the majority!

It's a shame Volvo and Saab were linked together, I wonder if Saab drivers are as bad...

What was this a commercial for? Or was it just a DJ's observations?

That is like saying Ferrari owners have small penises. But it is funny. The truth be told, SUV's are more likely to give a false sense of security than a Volvo.

I have a Volvo p1800 that spews out 300-400hp depending on what head I have on it. It eats Vettes alive. Not very safe, but I am happy.

Now THIS is my idea of a Volvo:

Only the first line was part of the commerical, the rest were MY observations...

The commercial was for a Volvo & Saab dealership...

    That is one sweet Volvo.

    Who did the work?

On Topic: The funniest radio ad I heard recently was for Coca-Cola. The tagline was "A house full of Coke always means a house full of friends"

That car I posted is from a bodyshop owner up north in Ontario Kanuckistan, I think he is running the same motor I am. My next project is tuning my motor and stroking it to copy a 10 second all Volvo street car.

I listen mostly to iTunes myself streaming radio, they usually don't have many commercials, but they are playing one with Ricky Jay that makes me chuckle, the sad thing is that I can't even remember what he is saying, it is a promo for a bit he does on Mondays on KCRW.com

The P 1800 was an anamoly for Volvo wasn't it? They've never really gone back to try a sports car formula since, nor has Saab, since the Sonnet. (Correct me if i am wrong).
As to the drivers, i think there is some truth to stereotypes. For example, Volvo sells based on "safety" and folks inclined to buy on that basis may be, shall we say, a bit more tentative in their approach to driving. I remember somebody, in connection with motorcycling, claiming that Volvos were to be avoided because of their drivers' typical road behavior.
On the other hand, i have found, more than once, a Saab trying to climb up my ass when i am out driving in a performance car. My impression of Saab drivers is, based only on my own experience, that they are a bit more aggressive than those typically driving Volvos.
The ones i watch out for most are older mid-priced American cars since their drivers tend to be elderly (unless the grandson borrowed or inherited the car); rusted out US station wagons driven by Hassidic Jews up the Palisades on their way back to their enclaves (don't worry, i'm jewish) and most SUV drivers- the latter since they either cannot drive, or are driving way too fast for their vehicle and others' safety.

True the last true sports car was the p1800, though the T5 series was pretty quick, and their 850 wagon was doing really well overseas racing. The S60R AWD (400hp 5cyl) they are about to take out racing will be good too, but they have always put safety before performance, not to say that others have not done the reverse. The sub 40 crowd are more likely to give it the throttle. While the over 40 are buying in concern to safety.

I agree that if I see a Buick, Olds, Chevy Malibu, I would say they are substantially slower than the rest. If you hate those cars too, then the Catskills in August is hell.

You did forget one thing though, it has supposedly been determined that Volvo drivers run the most red lights. Something about the perceived safety increasing your willingness to risk that yellow light that you know is going to turn red the split second before you enter the intersection.

Oh, and my Volvo does 80 when traffic permits (it also slides around corners... but that’s something else all together) but given the traffic in SB in the morning... well that’s not always possible!

Why are they so hung up on 5 cylinder engines? Why not just make six cylinders? They're inherently balanced, smoother, etc.

It is sad that by the time people realized they could get 400hp from 2.3l 4 banger Volvos, they went to the 5's I wish they would abandon them myself, but with readily available off the shelf parts they cam make 300 ponies now from their 1.8 liter mortors  I wil always use a b23x family of 4 bangers in my V-hotrods. I am aiming for 600hp right now on a project motor now that I have loads of free time.
