30,000 miles, so I changed my oil, filter, and transmission fluid. I went with the Redline lightweight. I had to remove two metal plates under the car to get to the oil drain plug. One has louvers on it, and the other hooks up to the first, and a trans shifter plate. I wanted to get the car down off of the lift and into the garage as I was losing daylight. My question is, how necessary are these two plates. I almost left them off when I had the alternator rebuilt, but now the car is down, and the two plates are off. What do you racers do? I already removed the sheilding around my tubi. Maybe the car is getting lighter.

PS I found the 12mm allen socket at Autozone, part of a three allen socket set.

They are there to route air flow. Also would protect the belt area from dirt and small gravel. I would leave them on.

They should go back on the car, but not critical for a short time. Mike F drove his 348 about 35 miles to my house for the alternator removal with the plates off, no problems. I just would not leave them off permanently. I don't think the big allen socket for the gear oil fill is a good idea. It is much easier to just fill the trans through the dipstick opening.

The 12mm allen socket was for the oil drain plug. For the trans fill I used a spark plug socket reversed on the wrench.

I thought it was easier filling from the big opening on top of the gearbox, as opposed to the dipstick opening. Bigger opening and all that. :):)

The dipstick is "all the way down there" too. Filler plug is right there and was very easy to fill that way IMO. Was also good to remove dipstick and check level as you were filling the gearbox from the big fill plug. :):)

But you can do it anyway you like I suppose. :):)
