All I can say is WOW, what a track. If Surfers Mecca is the North Shore of Hawaii then the Ring is ours I rented two 3 series BMW race cars, my coach drove 1 ahead of me and I drove the other and after three 14 mile laps we were seriously hauling. I still have the "Fox Hole" in my mind, its a Long straight that goes down hill then back up hill and ends w a flat out left hander and the track just keeps going and going and going I'd like to go tour Germany next year w my own car, maybe in July w a few friends now that I have contacts w a race team that can store our cars and work on them and provide driver training This is a MUST DO trip at least once in your life
Who did you rent from? I did the same thing back in May (renting from RSR). Yes, the ring is something else. The craziest tracking experience ever.
Udo Frey is a racer there and he is connected with Dolate Motorsports who are very well known there for preparing BMWs but Jurgen Dolate is a race car engineer so he can work on just about anything I have their contact info if anybody is interested
Drove my 550M on it last September. Utterly weird, but fantastically addictive. However, I was very glad I waited until the last half hour when the track was virtually empty. It's crazy at midday. Must go back! I wonder how my TVR Griffith will fare there, it's quite a bit quicker than my 550 below 200km/h. Well done William, you are right - it is a must-do, but for me (3 hour drive from there) a lot easier to arrange than for you. Kudos! On the other hand, driving your own Ferrari there uninsured is also not for the faint-hearted.... I think this rental option is not bad! Onno
Congrats . I defferently want to do this sometime in the future, i've been to the town of Nurgberg and saw a Porsche blast round the F1 Circuit, but the nordschleife is completely different. The 3 series BMW's sound very cool.... How many laps could you do? How much was it? What the hell have you done to your Z06 to get 630hp? That would be so much fun to do it in that car with that power.... just don't do it in the wet, heard it rain alot there lol. Congrats again... sounds like a blast!
I rode w Udo 3 laps on Sat then the track was closed do to fog Next day we did 5 laps in the AM and 6 laps in the PM, by the end of the day we were going pretty fast RE the Z06, the engine was rebuilt by Katech who builds the C6R LeMans engines, it has new pistons, cam, pushrod, intake manifold, twin oil coolers, Comp oil pump, Lingenfelter sump, headers etc Udo told me its best to use intermediate tires on the Ring as it often is sunny on 1 side and could be rainy somewhere eles
I did two laps in a rented (Hertz) 3 series BMW in 1993. Unbelievable experience. I was in Germany for work. Two co-workers rode with me. One drove a lap also. One held the video camera. They never heard of the place. On both of my laps I was not able to dive into the caroussel because I was being passed by motorcycles. I used the left window and the sunroof open to stick my arms out to point to which side I wanted to be passed. Once in your life you must go. Jack
William congratulations! Someday hopefully, but you should take the F40 and put it to the test! The corvette might be a great car, but I would bet the F40 would be better, in all respects.
Amazing you were able to drive at all - for comparison how it looked like on Saturday, see here. But I hope the OGP on the F1 track provided for enough amusement during that day, even without driving
Problem w F40 is thats it has a very stiff suspension, So I;d have to soften it considerably before putting her on the Ring Meanwhile my Z is Far from stock and has fully adjustable race shocks, better brakes, more power, and a 17 year technology advantage Also the Z is less tricky to drive something thats a definite plus on a scarey old monster track Plus of course the Z has a lot more cargo room for touring Germany later
I need to get acclimated to driving cars fast, I'd love to ride it on the bike though... This thread is motivational, that is for sure. Sounds like a great time.
Hi everyone, So I'll be there in a week and a half; I'll finally have some free time to drive a couple laps on the track. Any tips from members that drove there already? Any embarrassing situation that I can learn from? I'll probably end up renting an A3 or 3 series from a nearby city and will drive it to and on the Ring. Thanks for the feedback. B
HossB, all the German rental car campanies have a Nurburgring exclusion in their policies. And these days they are all fitted with trackers so not worth the risk. If you want to drive a couple of laps you're better of renting from RSRnurburg, rentaracecar or rent4ring. BTW saw this funny video Americans at the ring don't have the best reputation, hahahaha -> [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdCORe7sFOY[/ame]
Source for this? Although every single one of the ~250laps I've driven on the ring, including my very first, was in a rental car (everything from a beetle cab to Opel Speedster) I'd tend to agree with E40's suggestion. The NS is much more crowded nowadays than my first trip in '98 so the chances of an incident are higher. I'll still take rental cars on the NS (understanding that any incident will be paid for completely out of pocket) but as a beginner probably not a good idea. Though if you keep an eye in your mirrors, promptly move right with blinker on when faster traffic appears, and keep a level head I'd still do it. Also, mill around the parking lot and try to meet people. It's not all that hard to get passenger laps with people you feel comfortable with, but it helps to have a helmet along. Have fun and let us know how it goes!! Kurt http://s180.photobucket.com/albums/x155/kedelbach/Nuerburgring/?start=all
if you haven't already spend some time here: http://nurburgring.org.uk/ BTW - I'd take a 3-series over an A3 any day for the Ring. Had a 320d wagon last trip (on winter tires even though it was august) and it was fantastic. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks E40, I was not aware that ALL of them have that in the terms. The RSR site looks good; I'll check it out in detail later. Hopefully when I will be driving on the course it won't rain so much ... and luckily I'm only half American, so I'll be twice as good
