    Welcome to the board!

Don't worry, you're not the first with that crazy idea. I had it myself once. Not that it's completely gone, but building one from scratch is very expensive and to some point a sacrilege.

Starting with one that had accident damage and needs some front or rear replaced is better. The best way though would be to buy one that is already made and improve on it (they're almost all wrong in some way).

    Some pointers for your research:
    - check out the archives, Bert has even made his very own version of it
    - http://www.berlinettamotorcars.com/GTOstylebodyparts.htm
    - http://italianauto.com/page2.html
    - Norwood from TX does the build out including stretching the chassis and reversing the engine

Good luck and do some research. It costs more than you probably think it does and in the end you have a really hot car that doesn't live up to the expectations its looks suggest.

where could i find a 308 in rough shape? Also, what might you pay for one? I have seen a few but all of them were over $25k.

There is a $9500 project chassis at Italian Auto that is in the link above.

I've even considered building a race car off of it, but Spicy would prefer a non racer for the street...

thats not rough enough :D I was thinking light body damage (good frame), awful paint, some interior (at least the dash) and a blow (or no) motor. That would be perfect.
