Having given some thought to a recent thread.....perhaps many of us do not hear what's good about Chicago. If we knew more about the good things, many of us would or at least could experience them. That may change some perceptions.

Let's be positive here and list what we like the best.

    I'll go first:

I do like the loop area. Lots of interesting things to see. My fav. is the Musieum of Science and Industry. I can spend all day several times a year there.

I also enjoy the view of the shore.

    Awesome!

    I love the loop too!

I like the CTA and how it can take me downtown. I like BGC, and how I'm able to carspot and film all the nice cars. I like the shops on the Mag Mile and Water Tower place. I like Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs! The beaches are good, I like LSD and the LSD bike path, which, during the summer I pass by. I don't often go to the museums, but when I do, I enjoy those.

    Great thread.

I like the first nice couple of days when spring comes - All of the girlies feel the need to strut around in the short skits and whatnot...

Love it for its......beautiful sky line, georgous lake-front, awesome neighborhoods, great ethnic areas with equally great ethnic food, first class dining, entertainment and culture, world class schools, diverse suburban life for those who don't want to live in the city

AND.....driving on LSD with the top down on a sunny day is incredible!! (that's Lake Shore Drive, of course)

Hate it for its.....corruption, politics, high cost of living and getting higher, waaaaaaayyyyyy too long winters, and infringement on 2nd amendment rights.

I'll start with burger places:) Hamburger Mary's in Andersonville, Kuma's Korner on Belmont, and Moody's Pub on Broadway. Three completely different burger places. The atmosphere ranges from outrageous to sedate.
The river walks downtown and in the neighborhoods.
Sledding hills: Warren Park, Forest Preserve off of Devon, and the one near McCormick Place.
The view from the lady's bathroom at the John Hancock Bar (get your minds out of the gutter) I'm talking about the views of the city/lake.
Record stores! Reckless Records, Dusty Groove, and Jazz Mart. Dusty Groove often has the benefit of some well known local musicians hanging out incognito. They are amazingly friendly and like to talk about "other people's music."
The ravioli a la Luigi at Rose Angelis.
Open water swims at Foster. The history of Leone Beach (oldest junior guard program in the US, two of the founders of PADI worked there, Jack London manuscript found in the attic, etc...) The street end beaches in Rogers Park. Watching the Air and Water show from the North end of the Belmont Harbor hook.
The Globe Pub to watch soccer games, the picture books that are behind the bar at the Green Mill…

For those of you who enjoy the Museum of Science and Industry, there is a city parking lot just south of 57th Street off of LSD that is next to the entrance by the IMAX Theater. The parking is cheaper and the line to get in is usually much shorter than the main entrance underground.

    I love Chitown because
    - it has a lake front with a beach
    - it is a true metropolis sizewise and with its cultural mix
    - it has an airport taking me anywhere in the world
    - it has stunning architecture
    - it is a mini version of NY but where you can still drive a car
    - it is in the US of A where the laws aren't as verklemmt as in Europe
    - it has a sizeable economy and job market

...and by now it is where the heart is and the friends are.

For all those reasons, if it wasn't Chicago, I'd probably be living in LA or Miami, my other two favorite places.

    Cool thread btw.

As I tell all of my friends, one of the three most beautiful big cities in the world. The other two are Rome and Paris. And I can't decide which one I like the most !!!!

Both great cities but they lack the water front.

    Within Europe I'd pick Barcelona.

Anyone remember Beirut before the outbreak of the civil war in the 70s. It was considered the Paris/New York of the middle east. Beautiful city on the Mediterranean with great restaurants, shopping and ancient wonders.

Last time I was there was in the early 70s; around the time the strife escalated.

Met a couple in Athens that became great friends. They were from Beirut and we'd meet someplace in Europe for holiday a couple of times each year and travel together. The last time we were going to return to Beirut with them the war had escalated and they suggested we not come.

Oh, the stories I could tell!

Restaurants, Lakefront, Easy to get around for such a big city,

*CHEAP HOUSING comparing to pretty much any other city with equal number of people/opportunity....meaning the ratio of ability to make money vs. cost of living.

(try buying a newish condo anywhere in NYC for $200 sq. ft.)

You may know a little bit more than I on the subject, BUT ~$875,000 for a NICE 1000 sq ft condo!? I don't even think the Trump or Elysian commands those prices. Unless you're talking of homes over $5 MM, then you might be on to something.

    Chicago...
The great majority of people are friendly to a fault... me being one rare exception ;)
Outrageous diversity in (really good and sometimes world class) dining experiences...
IMO... definitely one of the cleanest "BIG" cities anywhere in the world...
Incredible wealth of cultural activities... Museums... Theaters... Universities... Art fairs... Galleries... Neighborhood fairs... Music... Parks...

I could go on ad nauseum, but at the moment, time is at a premium.

3000+sq ft apartments (Elysian 3.5k) at that building,2520 Lakewood,800 Michigan,900 Michigan,55 E.Chestnut and many others are selling today from $2.5mln and up.
Small (1000-2000sq ft)are selling at much lower prices per sq ft indeed.
To stay on the subject,it's still much cheaper then NY.

Surely for anyone with a Ferrari (or most any other sportscar with a decent exhaust note) a big one can be stated in three words: Lower Wacker Drive! :)

    Indeed.

We're watching "Selling NY" and are always stunned at seeing apartments like ours (which were in the 200-400k range) going for 1.2 million and more in NY.

You pay prime $ in Chicago for prime locations around Grant Park or Lincoln Park, but North of that the prices become much more reasonable.
