It's my favorite track and the F8 drives like a dream. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Did you notice if that gray patch next to the BMW in the picture is a repaired section of track or just an illusion on the picture?
Laguna is a fun track but the noise regs keep a lot of cars off it. And its not out in the middle of nowhere like Thunderhill.
2004 that was my experience, the "test" day they didn't regulate at all, I was blowing 105 Db, for the FCA track day I was put on time out after a single session, didn't get to enjoy as much.
I've always wanted to do COTA. There's an event there in November I'm still debating whether to do or not
Do it! You will not be disappointed. I've raced it about 1/2 a dozen times. Airport access is easy. Austin is adult playgroud-ish. Fishing is good. Texas BBQ is amazing. Lots of great food in the area. Giant sporting goods stores like Cabela's. The track has lots of safe runoff areas being a Tilke F1 track. Facilities are great even a shared bathroom between you and garage neighbor. Big garage easily enough for 3 racers maybe more if doing HPDE trackdays since less wrenching on cars. The track messes with your head because of the track limits painted surface. It has safe runoff but the painted lines mess with your head thinking it is not OK to be out there. Contrast that with Watkins Glenn and at the edge of the track is Blue Armco and lots of stuff to hit.
Laguna has a certain number of unlimited days, 103, and 92db days. The area natives moved next to racetrack then complain about noise! SCCA races we always get 103DB. Can remember if we ever got 105? We got unlimited for the Runoffs there in 2014 like the pros iirc. Street car guys like speed ventures usually 92DB with occasional louder days if those days are not used up. We got some great tracks in Cali....laguna, T-hill, sonoma...even buttonwillow now has 2 tracks and something like 30 configurations.
I agree. Best and one of safest tracks ever. The Corkscrew gets a lot of ink, but it is no big deal. Turn in, line up, and you're out. T2 is another story. Even in a Miata, you have a long straightaway to build up speed. You then watch the numbers go by, 4-3-2-1, and in a Miata, you're still flat. When you're sure you're going to die, you stomp on the brakes, turn in, trail brake, and drift through the first apex headed for the second apex. When you're halfway through, you realize you braked too soon... again. Best corner ever. If you screw up, there's miles of gravel trap. Enjoy, it sounds like you are.
Yes! That's why I asked about that patch looking thing by the BMW picture. We were the 1st club to race on the new surface around July 1st.. We got 2 practice sessions in and one of our guys blew a motor right there and caught fire. He was OK. Fire guys responded slow and the car burnt right down to the new asphalt with all those oils still in the mix. An inspector said it was OK to race but we were done for the day. Saturday we all show up ready to race and the even is canceled and we all go home because another inspector says the surface is damaged and must be fixed. It must not have been bad because next W/E the pro motorcycle guys raced without incident. I can't tell you if the new surface is better or faster or not since we just did not have enough time on it. I also do not know if they put the grip paint on the apex curbing like they had for moto GP. Before the repave we could drive on the apex curbing and have grip. I do not know what that paint is now. But the track limits curbing on T11 did not seem to provide much grip. I have not decided if it is worth driving on it or not....more laps needed!
I couldn't keep my foot flat over the crest of the hill in turn 1 going into turn 2. I swear I'm catching air in the F8 (I'm 130+ over it). They repaved it a couple weeks ago, and there's a ripple in the middle of the track just before the top of the hill, and in addition to a wiggle, I heard my rear tires chirp...SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. After that I took the outside line and that was a lot smoother. I'm hard on the brakes before the first braking marker, then ease off and trail brake to rotate the rear of the F8. Once you're past the turn 1 hump, it's super fun.
The good thing about spec Miatas is they are cheap. Skippy used to give a full waiver for $500. The car has two speeds. Flat on the gas, or flat on the brakes. Racing somebody's else car is cool. I don't think I'd be up for hauling ass in a $300k I owned.
Called into LS on a US roadtrip back in 2014. Was everything I hoped it would be, Happily pay a premium to live next door to it just to be able to sit in the garden and take in all that orchestra most days.
Should have done that in the old Group Seven days. When Laguna was full of big block McLarens, Chaparrals, Lolas etc. That place shook. Little doubt its partially responsible for some of my hearing loss. On the old track heading down the hill just before the pit road off they spun the tires in every F'n gear.
I didn't realise Laguna was so noise regulated! I was at Car Week in '16 and watched 60's V8 race cars...it actually made me wince, even with my fingers in my ears, it was so loud it hurt
