I really like this car. Never been a huge fan of Mercedes, other than a couple here or there. But this is the first new Merc I have really liked. I like the muscular look they have gone too.

I like it but am a little dissapointed in the 0-60 figures (4.2). The V8 AMG's used to keep up with the FCar V8's...........

Anyone heard anything on a V12 (SL600 or 65) model? I can't find any info on the web. They phased them out of the SL's a year ago, but it wasn't clear if it was just until the next model or not........

I personally do not appreciate the new SL's ungainly proportions and sadly must say it is my least favorite of all the sl's :(. I must see it in person though to make my final judgement.

It is hard for a designer to do much with those constraints -- other than to stick the engine behind the driver. Porsche may be having the last laugh.

Interesting point...I hadn't thought of that...considering the bulbous rear-end on the Panamera I think Porsche thought the "constraints" applied to the rear! :D

Im a HUGE fan of anything MBZ produces and have MANY of the top models. But I do have to admit, i think MBZ needs to make the top of the line SL's a bit more standoutish (that isn't a word is it?) I thought the Black label was the perfect concept of the top of the line SL. It looks alot different than the standard SL and you know what it is when its coming toward you.

^ I'm a huge BMW fan, but those Black Series Merc's are just so much cooler... SL Black Series is just a testosterone bomb...

I dislike MB's almost all the time. They don't do anything for me. I wouldn't buy one.

Don't expect it, if I'm not mistaken Mercedes has phased out their V12 engine altogether.

    No they did not.
S65/SL65 are coming with the latter available later this Fall.
New SL65 will have the same torque as the old one but with 640hp.

Maybe I'll feel differently seeing it in the flesh, but I am extremely unimpressed. MB tends to be quite conservative overall, but for the SL line they could have upped the style and flair factor.

You'll have to wait for the Black Series, and even those are conservative compared to other super cars.

I think MB is really missing out on a key price segment which Porsche has a dominant grip on. When you look at sports cars in the $80-120K range, it's all Porsche. I think the only competitors are the Corvette and Nissan GTR, but those aren't considered exotic. BMW doesn't have anything available in this range (surprisingly), Maserati is too high, and that leaves MB. If the SL posssessed an exotic flair and was lower in price (or offered a few different models starting at $80K), they would really give Porsche a run for their money. Any other car is an exotic and too much for even an above average earner to afford.

That $80-120K range targets those who have a good income but cannot necessarily take the next step to full out exotic. What are the other options other than Porsche?

AMGs are great as long as you get rid of it before the warranty expires.

I have not driven a SL for a long time I had a SL55 (It was very moded) about 6 years ago, and the biggest problem I thought the car had was how to could down its power. With the traction controls off the rears would just spin unless you barely touched the pedal, with it on you were unable to push the car off the line without it engaging. We tired everything to fix that but nothing worked. I ended up putting it back to stock and selling it. I hope the newer cars addressed that issue.
