I feel like my '89 SAAB 900 turbo is on its last legs.

And my next car needs to be newer, and reliable. Reliable reliable reliable. But I can't afford a new car right now. SO i was thinking...

In the interim, why don't I wet my whistle with some sub-$10K Mercedes? Just to get me to a fro for a little while?

Some of those classics are drop dead gorgeous. (Some interiors are of questionable cleanliness) but you get the basic idea. Cheap and good looking, just how I like 'em

This would help me get that air of sophistication that I've been lacking these past... 20 years or so. If I see one more frat boy in a Cayenne, I'm gonna scream.

You do realize that whenever these cars need to be serviced it's going to take several days?

IMO you primary car should be completely reliable (or as reliable as your budget allows), unless you live/work in an area you can do without it.

How about posting your budget, and getting recommendations from there....

Well, I'm used to waiting several days for my saab to be fixed...so that won't be an issue.

I'm just considering these Benz's as something to beat around in for the next several months, before I move to d/t Boston where I won't need a car. Under $10K, preferably well under.

My primary car comes later...I'll make a new thread when that comes around....

Ditto. Those are hobby cars you posted, not daily drivers. How about something new and reliable... or....

I like the late '80s Mercedes SL, if you want a tough car that still looks good and can hold its own in the daily grind. EDIT: Not sure you'll get a decent on for $10K.

If you really want something reliable and are on a somewhat limited budget, I'd suggest going for a newer Honda or something along those lines. Even on an older "luxury" car, maintenance is going to be expensive.

Why not a late 90's Lexus or Acura?

Exactly, if you want reliability go Japanese. A friend of mine's selling a '97 BMW740i black on black for under $10k. PM me if you want info.

what i really meant was while my saab is still running, i would purchase a second toy car to drive around on weekends etc...until my saab fails, then i would switch back and forth..and then i would purchase a reliable daily driver, like a 2001 ls430 for example, or a newish saab depending on how reliability on those checks out.

I'll echo the "go Japanese" comments with regards to price, reliability and maintenance.

That said, my first car was a 68' Merc 250SE. I still have it and it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Very simple to work on if you do it yourself. Very expensive to work on if you have MB do the work. Parts are readily available but you may have to sell a kidney to afford them.
