I am hooked up with Cingular/AT&T, and am happy with my rate plan. I have a Motorola Razr, and cannot take the crappy reception anymore. I like to have a decent camera phone (video ability is not a must-have), and I do minimal text messaging. I also want something lightweight, slim, and somewhat stylish. Clarity is the number one priority. I have no interest in MP3 playing abilities. Recommendations????
Sony Ericsson has a great line of phones. Btw it's hard to find a basic phone anymore, just about everything has a camera, mp3 player, etc. built into it.
ATT just dropped the price of the i-phone. I really like my razr but I am with Verizon and I think that they have a superior network in the metro Detroit area...take that for what it's worth.
+2 with buzz, I used to have a t-mobile blackberry and the service in detroit SUCKS!!! but i now use verizon and i have the LG VX9400 and it works great in michigan no matter where I go, I actually went to mexico and it worked fine with 5 bars anywhere. but the reason is, my brother has a razor for verizon and it works as good as my phone anywhere. It could just be your network. The cellphone signal is very scetchy in the place where you work/I live
Sony W810i. At it's basic level, it is a GREAT phone. Perfect reception, clarity, and no menu delays like I used to get with Moto products. Beyond that, it's simply everything. 1 Flashlight 2 2.0MP camera with auto focus and flash 3 easy access memory card slot (for 8 GIGS of music & photos) 4 FM radio 5 MP3 walkman 6 Boombox (built-in speakers that are LOUD) 7 Includes stereo headphones 8 Runs Java apps... ***Google maps*** talking language translators, Sonic The Hedgehog, a camera utility that senses motion and can automatically snap photos (great for security), a song app that listens to music anywhere & can tell you the title/artist, and too much more http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Ericsson-W810i-Walkman-AT-T_W0QQitemZ150157832402QQihZ005QQcategoryZ64355QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I also have one I could sell you, as I seem to collect these things Best phone ever!!!
I have At&t as well and have a Blackberry pearl which so far has been great especially if you want to access your email with your phone. It has a decent camera as well. I got mine from wirefly.com and had it in a day.
Cingular/ATT is terrible in NJ. Everyone I know who uses their phone for business selected Verizon. Rarely is poor reception due to a phone. The carrier is usually the culprit. The Verizon plan is not the cheapest, but it is the best in my area.
Get a tmobile blackberry. Mine is set to hop over to another network if tmobile isnt available. Im on cingular all the time if im out in the country. When im in europe it hops on orange or vodafone.
I have had bad luck with Sony Ericssons with reception. The Razr was a bit better. I have a Blackberry Curve now and it works great but it may be overkill for what you want. If I was to get a non-texting phone now it would definitely be a Nokia.
Well the Sony Ericsson Z710i is a really good phone, i got it 3 months ago, it had a 2mp cam and a music player, video recorder, etc its pretty good and takes nice picture's.. but now there is a MASSIVE slection of better phone's that have 5 mp cam's and as good music players as ipod video's (classic)
i bought the SOny Ericsson K800i in May, and i have zero regrets. 3.2 megapixel, and everything else is in there as i need never a Nokia again..
I am on my second RAZR that I got under warranty. Funny this thread came up because it just went out this morning. So now I am looking to get a new phone. My mother has a RAZR on the same plan as me and her phone has great clarity, no static, trouble free. Mine, everything sounds muffled and it sounds like someone is talking through a pillow. Absolutely terrible. Plus, this is the second RAZR that has had severe dust getting under the screen, making it impossible to see what is on the screen in any sort of daylight situation. I absolutely HATE this phone. Now I'm up **** creek because my plan doesn't expire until November/December and I need to get a new phone. I will be very very angry if they try to charge me full retail to get a new phone. FWIW, Cingular/AT&T has been my best provider. I've been with AT&T (switched when I moved to AZ) to Verizon (absolutely terrible), to Nextel (not bad, but expensive with the walkie-talkies), and now back to AT&T... I can't believe that for how long cell phone providers have been around, that there can't be a better network or fewer problems with this crap. This poor quality and service infuriates me.
Razors are TERRIBLE. I have one and hate it with passion. Horrible quality. I love Verizon's service...but this phone is just bad and overhyped. My other phone could go through WW3 and still work...this thing you drop once or twice and it starts to crap out. The display on my phone doesn't even work anymore. Bad bad bad.
No matter how good the phone is new, all things do wear out over time. If you have an old razor it's going to get bad reception on any service provider. The network could be the problem, but older phones simply break down and start losing signal strength.
After doing some research, I believe I am going to get the Motorola Razr V9m or the Maxx Ve. The V9m is $100 more because it is the latest and greatest, I just have to decide if having the latest and greatest is worth the extra $100. It will be with Verizon. Question; Both these phones have MP3 capabilities in them. The only time I listen to an MP3 player is when I travel by air. Phones are not allowed to be on while in the air. Does this mean you cannot listen to MP3 music on your phone with headphones when traveling by plane?
Blackberry Pearl. Hands down. I have never had better reception with any of my phones, it always had full service. Very clear, loud speakerphone. One of my favorite phones I've had.
I ended up getting the Razr V9m. I like it for it's compactness. About the same dimensions as my old Razr, but even thinner. Problem is the phone is so new that the guys at the store hardly know anything about it. It now has a micro-USB port, so hopefully I can find an adapter for my old car charger. I ordered a 2GB memory card, which will hold plenty of MP3s, so the phone will now replace my MP3 player on flights. So far, so good. Reception does seem superior to Cingular.

So after all the posts confirming that Moto and Razr phones are crap, you went out & bought one anyway? Make sure it has an "airplane mode". Best of luck.
Thought that I said that I was pleased with my Razr with Verizon service....maybe it's all the NyQuil that I am on.
