Yep, it time to change partners once again. I'm currently using a 1989 420 SEL as a my daily driver, but the old lady is starting to develop aches and pains, which have a tendency to develop aches and pains in my pocketbook.

My budget is $45k, and I prefer to buy used. I'm looking for something that is fun to drive, but I don't care about 0 to 60 times and all that. The other catch is that once a week, while school is in session, I hop in my car on Tuesday morning and drive 140 miles to teach my first class at 11:00. I then turn around and drive back Thursday afternoon. While I try to be ready ahead of time, it seems like I'm always cutting it close getting out the door on Tuesday morning. This means that when I turn the key, the damn thing has to start. Moreover, it has to keep running for at least 140 miles. Thus, I'm thinking of newer instead of older.

Here is my list so far. What other cars should I take a look at? Maybe a WRX? Maybe an Aston?

    2007 Boxster

    2006 Cayman

    2004 996 C2 Coupe

    2003 996 C2 Cab

    2001 996 Turbo

    2004 MB E55

    2003 BMW M5

    2007 C6 Cab

    2004 Maser Spyder

    2001 Viper Cab

    2006 Audi A8

    2007 Acura MDX

    Thx, Dale

    Given where you're teaching:

Ford F350 Diesel Crew Cab King Ranch edition.

Seriously, it will get similar fuel mileage at cruise and the leather really is nice. These big rigs are fun to drive, in a completely difference sense than the sports cruisers.

Your choices are quite diverse. Its unusual to have two seaters paired up with an SUV.
Having said that I would go for a 2006 Cayman or 2004 996 C2 Coupe, newer, fun to drive and hopefully reliable.

I thought he wanted to go teach a class not haul back a bunch of students... :)

I would go E39 M5 or 996 P-Car. Either Turbo or C2 would be great. The Turbo is a bit faster and would get a little less gas mileage, so make sure you fill up the night before you leave to leave yourself time, so that you don't have to possibly fill up in the morning.

I am a BMW and Porsche guy. E55 AMG would be a great car, but, I've never been as big a Benz man as a Bimmer man. You have had your Mercedes for a long time, so maybe that is more reason to get the Mercedes-Benz again...

I like the idea of the 01 996 Turbo, but if it were my $45k and TRULY a daily driver, I would go 05 645ci smg trans...Fun to drive, reliable and comfortable as a driver...

    Dael.....

You cannot get a $45K 996TT that is worth owning IMHO.......cheapest I have ever paid at wholesale was $52K 3 months ago......for a tiptronic car.

Get a Boxster S.......you'll never have a bad thing to say about it. Especially after that 140 mile drive.

I haven't driven one, but folks who have tell me that the MDX and RDX are better than the Porsche Pepper Car.

Ha, ha, ha, I already have a 2000 Chevy 2500 pick-em-up-truck complete with Harley stickers. Don't need another. :)

Why? I drove one a while back. Great car, for such a big car.

Yeah, I knew that a TT would be a strech for those dolllars, but I used to have a 2003, yellow, great car...

Howza bout the Cayman v. the Boxster S? I guess that I will never understand Porsche's marketing. :)

Whut about a 996? I know you Porsche guys don't like em, but they are cool cars.

BTW, am I right that first year depreciation on any new Porsche will be roughly 18%?

For all you M5 types, tell me more. I'd like to have a stick over the slush box in the E55. But is the M5 worth it? Do they have a lot of problems?

    Dale....

IMHO and based on the various 2006-2008 Porsche cars which I have bought and resold during that time, it is more like 25-30% right out of the chute. I'm talking about wholesale purchase prices versus MSRP of course.....not what someone would try and retail it for....which might be a 10-15% markup.

Cayman's are OK only if bought right price wise.......but the top does not come down and IMHO they are some what ugly around the rear quarters.

    996's are OK too.......but if I wanted a cabrio........I'd buy a Boxster S over a 996.

    Hope that helps.

I have ~40k miles on my current 2006 e60 M5 with SMG with no problems whatsoever...I put ~117k miles on my former e39 M5 and ~ 75k on my former e34 M5 with no problems either...they are fast, great handling luxurious sports sedans...

If you are buying an 03 you will encounter little to no problems. The 2000's had a few, but, that was depending on how hard you really drove them.

I am currently looking for an 02-03 M5 myself and have been searching the past few months, and what I've learned is that you have to shop for the right M5 that hasn't been beaten up (just like any other car purchase). I love the E39 M5, because they were fun, fast, luxurious and still pretty good on gas for such a high performance car. And they drive AMAZINGLY!!! I love the drive and feel of them. One of the best driving and handling BMW's ever! I doubt you would encounter too many problems with the car as long as you take care of it. It's worth it.
