I need to change my Starter Motor on my 308 GTB (1977). Anyone know the Bosch number for this or an other car using the same starter motor as the 308?
I do not know of a cross reference number, but I would think it is likely that there may be an interchangeable unit, or at least the internal parts. However, depending on whether your problem is a bushing, drive/clutch, armature, or field windings, you may be able to substitute the parts from a comparable starter that merely mounts differently to the engine. There are usually some 308 starters listed on ebay, but the cost and shipping would likely be more than the cost to rebuild your starter. At least one company makes a high torque gear reduction starter for the 308. Listed on ebay. Also, rebuilding a starter is a common repair for an alt/gen/starter shop. Good luck, DRG
Carb 308's came either with Bosch or Fiat starters, I believe the Fiat starter was used on the 130 model as well as a light truck. I do not know of a cross reference for the Bosch starter I have had both rebuilt at auto electric shops with success....
First go to the part number cross reference thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64460 Use the 'Search This Thread' function at upper right below page numbers. Search for 'starter' - Note this search stays withing the cross ref # thread. Many Fiat cross references available
I had a local electric motor shop rebuild my starter for under $100. Didn't reinstall it though. Got the gear starter and very happy with it. Much smaller and lighter and car starts much faster. Worth the $$$. PM me if you want the contact info.
Unless it's a real mess, they rebuild nicely. The parts are real solid on both marelli and Bosch units. Find a good auto electric place. I recall the bosch unit has a different armature than other starter motors even though they'd fit. More hi rev support with cord about the winds etc.
They aren't hard to do. They used to teach starter, generator and alternator rebuilding in high school auto shop. Dunno if they still, do, but not important. As long at the armature doesn't have a bad winding, which can be determined on a growler, a rebuild place can turn the commutator, install new brushes and bearings and solenoid, and starter drive, and you are good to go. That said, I would consider a newer gear drive starter. Doug
