One of the many things I know nothing about. Very basic, just a photo, a logo, and email forwarded to my main account.

    Help...?

The problem with those a-homepage-with-two-clicks services is: It looks so interchangeable (which it is, as the templates are used by thousands of users) and just ... well, some kind of tacky. There's a reason why those pages are mainly used by houswives presenting their pets and apple pie recipes :D

(and btw, $11.99 is a rip-off. You can nearly get a 'real' virtual server for that money!)

Streaming media? Like video or sound? Streaming media eats up your resources (traffic and server performance) really fast, you need a real dedicated server (or a couple of them). It depends very heavily on the number of visitors on your page. Prices range from 50 $ or € a month if you're a cheapskate and don't care if your visitors often encounter severe performance problems over the full three digit range for more robust solutions to a couple of thousands for setups with several servers, load balancers and whatever you can dream of.

No, Dr. S is like me: He wants a simple to design, 'even a caveman can do it' site with no learning curve needed. You may think $11.99 is a rip, but for me, it's insanely fast and the sites look decent............DSL and I not General Motors!

With these template sites, it's a bit like with Ferrari replicas. There might be a lot of people, maybe even the majority, who look at them and say "wow, now that's a NICE sportscar!", while people who are interested in the matter nearly eat their last meal backwards when seeing such a car... And $12 really is a lot of money for what you get. Imagine you have that site for 2 years. For $288 you can pay a local hacker kid to create a small website tailored at your needs and get some cheap webspace.

As said before, the cost of streaming sites depends massively on their visitor count. For real large sites, you're well into 5 digits a month.

(edit) From the technology, they have special server programs running on their servers, like Adobe Flash Media Server which deliver the streams.

This could be done with any ordinary photo album software (ie Coppermine) out there, and some custom layout and appearance (so called 'skin'). A fair bit of work, but no rocket science by any means.

In 2006, YouTube was eating up about 1 million a month in bandwidth costs. Since 2006, YouTube has almost tripled (I think). So either way, they spent a lot of money to run the site.
