I called T Rultands and they said there is no rebuild kit for 348 Calipers! I have a 89 and they also said they were not Brembo's yet on the car till later years. So the question is, who made the calipers on the car and where can I get the rebuild kit? I'm going to have them powder coated, so they have to be rubuilt. Thanks allot...

Who at T Rutlands told you that? Was it Brian Keegan? Can't believe that even early '89s didn't have the Brembos. They are the same brakes as some years of the Porsche 944 Turbo, so there should definitely be a rebuild kit available.

Ferrari used two manufacturers for calipers on 348s, Teves and Brembo and they don't show a rebuild kit available. That doesn't mean someome doesn't since porche used the same caliper maybe they show a rebuild kit. Regards, Vern

What years of the 944 Turbo do you think had the same calipers of the 348?

I don't know for sure, I not allowed to own or discuss them, LOL but if you look at the 968(later version of 944) model I think you will find them to be the same. Regards, vern

Goldline does Ferrari 348 caliper rebuilds: http://www.goldlinebrakes.com

They also do powder coating, polymer coating, and chroming if that's your cup of tea.

I'm not sure about that, but the 1986.5 through 1995 Porsche 928 models all use our same Ferrari 348 brake pads (but only on the rear of the 928's).

This is a picture of the rear Porsche 928 caliper for 1986.5 through 1995. To my untrained eye, it appears suspiciously like our Ferrari 348 calipers!

I don't know the answers to all of the questions about the 348 calipers, but one of my books suggests that the 348 uses pistons of 36mm and 40mm diameter, two of each, in each 4-piston caliper. I have scanned an exploded view of a 348 caliper. Looking at the website for Zeckhausen Racing, I see that they list a Brembo "Caliper Dust Boot and Pressure Seal Kit", number 89-100-3640, in exactly those sizes, at $50/caliper. That might be just what you're looking for. It would be necessary to verify that your calipers are indeed made (or licensed?) by Brembo (not Ate or Teves), and that the piston diameters are indeed in one of the sizes listed. Maybe? http://www.zeckhausen.com/Brembo/Consumables.htm

The picture you posted of the Brembo is a copy of the ATE caliper that is on my car. I will call them in the morning and double check that there seal kit will work. By the picture it is a exact copy of the ATE, it should be the same.
I hope! Thanks for reply post. GQ.

    Hey tech pros!

Do Ferrari 348 calipers **always** need to be rebuilt when they start sticking, or are there a few occassions when the sticking is caused by a collapsed hose or blocked hose??

How would you test for such a condition? Catch the caliper stuck and open a bleed valve (no fluid squirting out = need caliper rebuild), perhaps??

I don't know for certain what brand of caliper is shown in the picture I posted, the pic is from the "Ferrari 348" book by Werner Schruf. The book is in German, and I don't read German. In the data table, under "Bremsen" (brakes) it lists the Scheibenfabrikat (maker?) as "Teves oder Brembo".

Are ATE and Teves the same company? I think they are, but I wouldn't swear to it.

In answer to No Doubt's last question, I know that it is possible for a 348 brake to start sticking when the pad is nearly worn to the backing plate, that's what happened on the left rear on my car. It was very noticeably dragging when the pedal wasn't applied, but once I installed new pads, with no other changes, the dragging completely went away. Apparently the pad was sitting slightly crooked in the caliper, and not releasing properly. I also just went through a problem with a collapsed brake hose (on my 1992 Chevy Pickup) this last weekend. I had installed new rebuilt calipers ($18 each !!!) and new pads on the front of the truck, and the left front brake was sticking badly. The hose looked fine from the outside, but internally it was almost totally blocked, and the wheel got too hot to touch after a test drive. The new hose cured it.

The test procedure you describe will work as a good first check. If the brake is binding, and you can get it loose just by opening the bleeder and releasing pressure, it's at least possible that the hose is partially plugged. It could still be another problem (master cylinder, pedal linkage, etc.), but a problem in those areas should effect all of the brakes, not just one corner.

On my 1990 car they have ATE ones and i tried all over the Net to find a seal kit but there was none to be had. I had to reuse the old dust seals but they are i ***** to get back on!! i think you need a crimp tool to fit them on ???

Another question, since I took my calipers off, going to have to redue all the brake fluid and do a flush. Best brake fluid and what type for a 348?

Ferrari 348's can use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 (glycol) brake fluid (There are both natural and synthetic glycols). Super Blue/Gold works well, as does the Valvoline Synthetic.

DOT 5 or 5.0 however, is silicone brake fluid. Do not use silicone brake fluid in a Ferrari. Do not confuse DOT 5 with DOT 5.1. ATE. DOT 5 = BAD. DOT 5.1 = GOOD.

Pelican Parts has an Fchatter here (wayne: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/member.php?u=2363). He'd be the one to ring up. His site sells the rebuild kits for the Porsche 928 rear calipers: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=928M&section=BRKhyd&page=3&bookmark=8&part_number=951-352-919-10-OEM

Those rear calipers (from 87 to 95) use the same brake pads as do all four of our Ferrari 348 corners...so there is some reasonable chance that one of the Porsche 928 rear calipers is our 348 caliper incognito.

Sorry it didn't work out, GQ. I'm afraid you have become the guinea pig in this experiment.

One thought: If you are now pretty certain that you have Ate calipers, and that the Brembo seals don't fit the Ate pistons, is there any possibility that you could install Brembo pistons into the Ate calipers? Are the Ate pistons in one of the sizes listed as being available in Brembo diameters (28, 30, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, or 44mm)?? This isn't something where "close" would be good enough, it would have to be exact. But if Brembo makes a piston the same size as Ate (same diameter and depth), but the seal pattern is different, then the Brembo pistons and seals should be usable. If the Ate pistons are a weird size (say 31mm) then you will have to find a supplier for those particular seals.

I will post a picture of the best looking calpiers you will ever see for a 348. Powder coated, red and the raised Ferrari letters in white. They look like JEWELS. What you will not see is them on my car, still cannot find seals. Got a rebuild kit for a Porshe 928 1989 Rear kit, no good. Strike out again. Looks like the old seals are going back in.
