I have a friend who is travelling to Germany next month and wants to rent a car. Her US insurance policy will not cover her for driving anywhere except the US, Canada, and 25 miles deep into Mexico.

What type of insurance is required / available for foreign tourists renting an auto in Germany?

Are there any Fchatters in Germany who are insurance professionals?

If she hires a car, the car hire firm provides the insurance. Ring Hertz or someone, they will give you all the necessary info_Other than that she just needs a current drivers license.

I don't think that renting a car in Germany is different than anywhere else in the world.

The same goes for renting a car in Denmark, and I think most countries in Europe :)

Gold credit cards will give you primary coverage outside US, up to 30 days per rental contract. They also sell one time insurance if you want it - 25 bucks. They only cover large rental companies, and Porsches might be excluded. BMW and Merc are approved, but a Ferrari renter will not be covered under those plans.

Gold credit cards are not really a standard in Europe. I had a Gold Credit card even when I was a student.
