So i'm in the market for two new tires for the front of my car... The rears are fine with lots of tread left, but the fronts... well, not so much...

i'm price-shopping and one place tells me it'll be one price and another place quotes me almost $100 cheaper... $100 will fill my car with gas two times, so it's worth a lot to me... The only problem is, when i gave the second place the size of the tires, (215 / 55 on 16" wheels), they tell me they have tires in that size but they're American Eagle (Goodyear?) - my current tires are Michelins... This place sells Michelins but they said they're not showing up in stock under that size nor are they showing up as available for special order...

So here's my question(s)... Do i get the American Eagles even though the rears will still have Michelins...? If so, have any of you ever heard of American Eagle tires...? Are they good...? Thanks in advance...

Here are some pictures of my front tires... The last two pictures are of one of my rear tires to show how much meat is still in the tread...

    Dude,

Go buy used tires in a gas station for 30-40 bucks each.

While not ideal, you should be fine with the mismatch as long as the like tires stay on the same end of the car. I suspect you keep the speed below 170 MPH under most circumstances?

Though that would be most economical in the short term, it would be silly in the long term as i'd just have to go get more new tires in a few months... The tires you see in those pictures were new in April of '04...

As long as you keep one brand on the front and one on the rear you probably will be ok safety wise.

However, you will lose major points at Pebble Beach Concours...

Don't forget to try Costco. I just got a pair from there and their quote was about $40-90 cheaper per tire - I was quoted $180-230 for a single Bridgestone installed, they had it for $140 installed. I ended up with 2 BF Goodrich T/A's for $110 each, meaning a pair for what I might have paid for 1 Bridgestone.

A pair of tires shouldn't matter, as long as your powering wheels (I assume the front on the Sebring) are a matching pair.

Dude, clear out your PM box! Tried to send you one:

Saw your posts about the tires. Have you checked TireRack yet? I have a dealer account and checked their inventory...I show them as in stock in Louisiana and Indiana for $138 a each retail. Should cost you about $40 for shipping to you. That's on the Michelin XGT V4 if I'm reading that picture right. Just FYI.

BTW, someone up there mentioned going to a gas station and buying used tires...that's not entirely a bad idea. Do a phonebook search for tires and give them a call. Sometimes you can find really good tires for $30/$40 each until you're ready to replace all four.

And no, mismatching is not problem.

Nah, sometimes you can find great deals on those used tires...friend of mine owns a tireshop (ok, I do to but I don't do used tires) and they do...you'd be surprised how many people insist on replacing their tires when not necessary. Or if one side gets a nail or bulge, they'll insist on replacing both sides at the same time even if they're only a few thousand miles old.

    Here you go.
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=SRIXON4&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=155HR6SRIXON4&fromCompare1=yes&place=0

Never heard of American Eagle but going from Mich you would probably notice a difference. I am recommending these Sumitomos. I sell them at work, and put a set on my mom's car and have great luck with them. 50k tread Warranty, H rated. Solid center tread for sharper steering responce and straighter tracking. And at only $66, that's hard to pass up. Have them shipped to who ever you want to mount them. Sears will do it of course. :) I know some places won't do it on other retailers tires so check first.

Just use some black shoe polish on those cords and use a soldering iron to cut some new treads in them, good as new!

Buy em off discountires web site. Free shipping, and prices are
    as good as tirerack.

Recommended Kauffman tire on mansell road (exit 8 off 400) for
    mounting and balance.

They just mounted, balanced, and 4 wheel alignment for $112 two
    weeks ago.

Wow...! Great thread...! These responses are awesome, thank you all...!

$66 per tire is great... i can't beat that anywhere... i went to Wal Mart last night and they want $90+ for those American Eagles - but they only charge $10 per tire to change them... i'll have to go there today to find out if they'll swap tires for me if i buy them elsewhere... If so, i'm going with those Sumitomos...

i definitely do NOT want to go with used tires... The odds that two used tires will have pretty much the same amount of treads and that they'll last me long enough in conjunction with how much they cost are pretty slim... i'd just prefer to do it right and get new ones...

But these are some great responses... Thanks a lot, everyone, i really appreciate it...

Gran Turismo in Chamblee is the only place to get Ferrari's alligned and tires mounted/balanced in the Atlanta area IMHO. And your worn tires look like there is a major allignment problem with your car. If you carry your car to FoA for that service, they will just carry your car over to Gran Turismo to have the work done and then charge you a surcharge. Gran Turismo has been working on Ferraris for decades and have the expertise and equipment to do the job right...the first time! As to tire brands , if you're not into the concours-correct tire stuff, I really like Kumho tires myself.

If those tires were new in 4/04 how many miles did you put on them? On my wifes Civic she put 75k miles before she needed new tires. I'm going on 45k miles on my Sumitomos that I put on a couple of years ago and they still have tons of tread left. Something is not right if you are blowing through a set of tires in a little over a year. Remember building will not move and they will still be there if you are 10 mins late (meaning don't drive fast).

    Frank.

I think you are missing the big picture here.

    It's Carbie's car.

There are some GREAT roads out here... Tight, twisty roads that demand full atttention and yield near-limitless fun... Once i get new brakes after the new tires, i'm heading up to The Dragon... :)

Are those old MXX3's? First off those are old tires that haven't been made in quite a while.

I would swap all of your tires out and consider Bridgestone S03 pole positions, Michelin Pilot Sports. I would strongly consider moving up your size to a 225/45/16. It will give you more tread and a lower profile tire.

These two tires will give you the best balance between performance and durability. I do not ever recommend Goodyear or BF Goodrich to anyone because they give terrible feedback through the turns and are not predictable when breaking loose. Their only upside is that they are made of very hard rubber compounds and will last a long time.

Kumho's and Yokoham's are also worth consideration. Yokohama makes a DOT legal racing tire in this size.

By the way, first get your alignment fixed and check your tire pressures monthly. Either the alignment is out of whack or you are running way too much camber on your suspension. I run 2 degrees camber on my Viper front and rear, but I minimize the bad wear by rotating my tires side to side. It looks like one of your tires was under inflated causing it to wear more on the outside surfaces more than the center.

Sebring or Ferrari, the tires are your only connection to the road. I run V series Yokohama's on my wife's minivan because safety is much more important than wear. Don't laugh too hard because I have had to make a couple pretty scary evasive manuevers in that minivan to avoid idiots on LA freeways. Don't cut corners on tires and maintenance... even for a Sebring.

    That's my $.02. Good luck.

    Brad
