I just got a set of tires for my 550. I went to the dealer for them. My mechanic who has my car right now called me to say the front tires are the wrong size.

The question is what is the correct size for the front tires on a 550?

    2.55 45 ZR18 or 2.35 45 ZR18

Bart, Michelin provided OEM tires in the Pilot SX class for the 550 with a 235 front width. All th eother OEM tire suppliers provided 255's. If I were you, make them change to a modern 255 tire.

Just looked at mine, which are stock wheels and tires installed by the dealer. My fronts are 235/45/ZR18, Michelin Pilot SX. Could be the stock wheels can take 235-255?

So help me out here: what differences in handling, crispness of turn-in, etc are we going to see between a 235 versus 255?

The plate on the door jam says 2.35 not 2.55.

    Which one is stock?

Different companies spec their sizes differently. Some use the width to mean the actual tread width, and some use it to define the carcass size.

The overall circumferance is the important one, and the sizes in the handbook are all the same in real terms.

If you have 255 45 they are too tall. You need 255 40 or 235 45.

My 2000 550 came with Bridgestone S 02's in the 255/40/18 front size ..... haven't tried other tires on mine .... these work great and look good.

I took my 550 to Ferrari of Orange County today. Within three hours they had change both front tires for smaller ones. No mess, no hassle.

    Thanks!

    Please note
    The Michelin is a 235/45 ZR 18
    The others are a 255/40 ZR 18

One is a 45 and the other a 40 aspect ratio. This keeps the overall diameter the same. The manufacturer does not matter, only the size.

For this car the wider tire with the shorter aspect ratio is better for handling.
