William, I'll give you the experience I had locating 512TR plug wires. When the car was in for major service in Florida two years ago they found during testing that three plug wires had minor voltage leakage. New wires (both banks, 1-6 & 7-12) were about $1800. I shuddered but told them to go ahead and replace them. They weren't able to locate the wires anywhere and they tried a set of Testarossa wires but they wouldn't fit.

I took delivery of the car and proceeded to try and locate the wires myself. At an independant Ferrari source in CA they said they could get them for about $900 per side so I ordered them. They got one side, can't remember which, but the other side supposedly after extensive searching wasn't available anywhere in the world. The original stock of wiring was exhausted. They suggested I place a back order for the other side since Ferrari would have them built when enough back orders were stacked up.

In about two months I received a call that Ferrari had a run made and they were now available, but told me there was bad news. He said, "You already know what it is. The price of the next run of wires has doubled." Since the car was running beautifully I cancelled the order.

Another independent Ferrari shop called somewhere for me and got the list price of the wires. About $4200 for both sides. So the prices I'd been getting were DISCOUNT!! I contacted a friend in England that was able to buy the other side I needed for under $1600 including the import duty and shipping.

The new wires had Bosch's name on them and were exact duplicates of the originals. As you probably know the plug boots are very special and not something the after-market people have felt profitable to tackle. The metal loom that bolts to the valve cover is special and the wires fit through it during the factory assembly.

The good news is the original wires lasted 11 years and I probably won't ever need another set!!

If you find a better source than Ferrari, please share it with everyone as the 512TR wires are getting to the point of replacement due to age. Testarossa wires are availble from several sources, but not the 512TR. I checked every imaginable source but I may have missed something.

Yikes !! That is scary! For my old TR I simply made new wires myself but used the original sheathing and boots. I bought the wire in bulk along with the crimp connectors. Then I sat my butt in front of the TV on a Saturday afternoon and carefully made "new" wires. The total cost was less than $100 and they work fine with no problems. I'm not familiar with 512TR wires, but it would be worth a try to make them yourself if they can be carefully disassemble, and parts re-used.

As davehanda pointed out in his post, I have used Magnecore Wires successfully in my former 308 and TR. Will not hesitate to use them in my current 348 spider. Superior to the OEM product. IMHO.

I spoke to the race shop that built my silver car & they are making me a set of wires.

If they work I will offer them for sale

$4000 + for wires is retarded

    carguy-

What brand and type of wire did you use? I replaced spark plug wires on many F cars in my life with excellent results. I did exactly what you did on my TR and was not happy with the outcome. I tried accel and magnacore. I was getting some backfiring with both types. So I put the old ones on and ordered a set of Ferrari ones. YUCK!!! I know they are sensitive to the amount of resistance.

William H- I also will be interested in finding about how you make out with your shop.

I will keep the info for future reference.

Distributor caps and wires on the TR series are outrageously priced. I think they should be replaced every so often, but they alone cost more than I paid for my excellent used Merc.
