Somebody always has to push it. Makes life tough on the good guys every so often. Thats why there can be a reserve on Ebay.

Thankyou huskerntexas for showing me the light. I don't claim to know everything about ebay like you do. I do know I did not hold a gun to Steve's head, I asked him did he think I could buy the car at 70 grand. He said no but 72,900 would do it. So I said here is my contact at the Lexus store and he said O.k. He lead me to believe it was O.K. to end the auction. So please get off my back. I am a person of high morals, you don't sell cars in one town for 45 years by screwing people.

Dave...please forgive if I offended. But honestly, can you with a straight face say it is "right" to sell a car outside of an auction for it when you have bidders who, in good faith, are attempting buy the car via the auction?

Is ebay different that Barrett Jackson, Manheim, or any other auction?

    Do what?

I see your point. I guess I was looking at it a little at it in a different light. I personally never have purchased anything on ebay. I asked our ebay guy and he said ebay does not like it but that it is done. I did not call Steve with the intent not to bid, I call all the people just so I can talk to them, you know, make them testify to the car. Maybe I took it wrong but when I asked how much are you wanting it to bring because I was wanting one for around 65 to 70. He said no, but 72,900 will buy it, I was giddy, so I said alright and to be honest I honestly did not think it was a big deal. Ebay is probably to much for me, I am going back to talking to dealers. I have missed 4 cars so I was just very excited about Steve's car. I have enjoyed and learned alot from ferrarichat so I guess I now learned one more thing. I hope whoever got it has a great time with the 355. I just feel a mistake is different then running around screwing everybody on purpose. As far as all the auctions we have people that travel to all those, and yes, when dealers sneak in retail buyers it does drive the prices up.

Dave...sounds like the guy was a general flake. I didn't intend to sound condescending. I have certainly (and regrettably) done my share of things in life that, in retrospect, I feel were on the unethical side. Just one of those things...

I talked more with our guy over ebay and again I see how it was offensive. I have always called the seller because of ebay scams. I never just start bidding on the car without trying to get a feel for the car. The seller seemed like he would like to sell it to me outside the sale. I talked with Mario and I think we all got some mixed signals. I was not thinking of the auction, just that he priced me the car and I am used to just buying things on a handshake, my word is good. Sorry if I offended.

    Dave,

nice talking with you this afternoon.

After talking with the crowd and now Dave who had almost the same experience I had the situation can be summed up as follows:

Ferrari owner needs to sell car.

    Ferrari owner has health problems.

Ferrari friend says he'll help sell.

Friend says Ebay is the best place.

Friend puts it in Ebay and tells friend things are ready to go.

Friend puts his telephone number as contact to filter calls.

Friend gets pounded with calls and inquires. doesn't expect this response.

Friend gives up realzing he can't answer anything about the car..

Friend refers to owner who really is a Ferrari enthusiast, but doesn't know what to do because of his health.

Ferrari owner gets bombarded with at least 3 confirmed buyers...

Ferrari owner doesn't have a clue how Ebay works..he just wants the car sold.

Ferrari owner gets giddy over the fact buyer #1 wants car and agrees on price. Buyer #2 offers more than #1 and excitement over the stir starts getting him tiresome. Buyer #3 offers $500 more than #2 but #3 is in Ferrari owners back yard..is an idiot because he doesn't want a PPI...

Ferrari owner contacts friend and says what the hell do I do.

Friend says sell it to #3 he is the easist..

Friend says I'll cancel Ebay..dont worry sell the car.

Ferrari owner tells buyer #3 to come pick up the car.

Buyer # 1 - Dave is shut out

Buyer # 2 - Mario - AKA: Lawwdog is shut out too..pissed off, whiney, and ultimately confused to the entire event because he wanted the car. F-chat sets him staight and tells him to chill out.

Buyer # 3 - pays for Ferrari with no PPI ...drives into the sunset.

Buyer # 3 - to be continued after drive into sunset.

This has been an experience..next Red/Tan 355 B is waiting for Mario & Dave.

    Mario

That's about how I see it. Don't under estimate this gentleman's illness. I never would have given this deal another thought.

    You'll find the right car.

    You're not alone.

I offered to buy a Ferrari from an F-chat member in Montreal about a year ago subject to a PPI with a very generous allowance for identified repairs.....and after agreeing to a price and asking for the bill of sale to be faxed over so I could tender a deposit, I was told that "I don't like your condition about the PPI as I want to inspect the car in my shop first and change all the fluids...etc...etc.....before you get your PPI done elsewhere)..........

    I didn't walk.....I ran......

If the car has met the reserve then it would be wrong to end the auction to sell to someone outside of the auction.

If the car has not met the reserve and a legit buyer is wanting the car for an agreed to price then the owner of the vehicle should have the right to cancel the auction at his chosing, but he should state so in the auction listing.

Ebay does not like selling items outside of their auction once listed, but they do permit it to happen because the buyer can go back to his listing page and select the "item is no longer available for sale" posting, which immediately ends the auction.

eBay knows that dealers list with them all the time. I think this option was intended for them since alot of dealers have websites that show the car is for sale.

Ebay knows sales are made outside of the auction and actually permit it. If they didn't they would not let you end an auction early with the "item is no longer available for sale" post.

They still get their listing fee, but lose out on the percentage selling price.

interesting question posed in that auction:

    ##############
Q: Hello, I am totally serious when I ask this question. Can I have your ferrari for free? I am in no way trying to waste your time, I just figured there is someone out there who would just give it away(either they are swimming in money or just like to give stuff away) . Well your probably laughing at me by now or really annoyed , but I figured I would give it a try since nothing ventured is nothing earned. Have a great day! Cheers, Dave

A: Lots of people would like to have this car. If we wanted to give it away, we wouldn't be auctioning it for money. My seller has many dollars earmarked for charity, so the proceeds could be "given away" as you are suggesting, but there will be serious consideration who will be the recipient, and why. Are you giving anything away today? Have a nice holiday season. Mike

I hope you don't think that was me ashsimmonds, I am Dave but that sounds like a kid. I never bid or did anything on ebay, I just went right to the owner. I was taken back by the unethical comments, and I just was trying to clear up that there is a difference between unethical and unsure. I am not new here but had not posted before and I hate to get off on the wrong foot, so like I said, I did not intend to offend anyone.
