One of my plans for future work in the legal profession is to work for one of the bigger firms in Las Vegas. The city is growing, the economy is expanding, and real estate is becoming relatively expensive. I figure that if I can get in on the "ground floor" so to speak, I will benefit in the future with a likely partnership and a nice fat piece of land that will be quite pricey in the future.

Anyhow, my fiance does not want to live in Vegas. She hates the desert. Of course, she has not seen any of Las Vegas aside from the strip.

So, what I need is someone to tell me where to go in residential Vegas or Henderson, or somewhere within 20 miles of downtown Vegas/Henderson, where real estate consists of more than flat desert land.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on where I can take her to perhaps change her mind? I'm heading to Vegas with her this weekend.

    Any help is appreciated.

A very good friend of mine owns two houses in the Sorrento Devolpment. He loves it. He is based out of San Jose, but travels there all the time. I have spent the last 2 years out there on the 4th of July and time out on the lake (Mead), which is at the closest point 15 minutes from his house. Out there, you are close enough to the strip, yet miles away. I have 2 other friends that live in Henderson and love it. All of them used to live here in San Jose.

(p.s.-Celine Dion lives out there as well as Paul Tracy (rumor) and others.)

My ex lives in Vegas. I've seen and done (almost) it all.

I would suggest going to the Valley of Fire park. Some stunning scenery.

    http://parks.nv.gov/vf.htm

You should also take a trip to Mt Charleston. I was up there in April and there was tons of snow at the top, skiing, hot chocolate in the lodge and a wood fire, etc. Very rustic and home-ey. Just drive there yourself though - don't bother with a tour. Very very cool place to take the chiquita - romantic and all that

    http://las-vegas-tours.vegasguide.com/mount_charleston_tour.cfm?amid=18591

Another is Lake Meade. It's near the Hoover Dam (behind it actually LOL). There is a tiny city called "Echo Bay". You will pass signs for it driving through the Valley of Fire. I got lost there - only place to get gas for many miles. Very friendly people, easy to rent boats and go out on Lake Meade. The wifey would love it.

Boulder City is also decent - a bit out of the way and a chance from Vegas. Nothing special there really, just a different place to visit.

I kinda sorta looked at moving to Vegas. I probably would go a bit nuts living in the desert in some oasis, but LA isn't very far away and there is plenty going on over there.

    Good luck!

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and my parents still live there. They are thinking of relocating, and have several friends in real estate. Housing values are predicted to be flat to slightly down for the next 12-24 months. Vegas has gotten very expensive compared to where it was, and just beware that there may be a bit of a bubble phenomenon. Plus, water (or the lack thereof) is a growing issue.

Another neighborhood to consider touring is the Lakes and Summerlin (head west from the strip, Sahara and West Charleston are two of the major arterials that go through the area). Summerlin is doing the huge master planned things, with walking paths, natural areas, etc.

    Good luck.

If you want to go to a nicer normal area, aka "boring" go to Green Valley and take her to the Anthem Community, Scummerlin is a mix of old and new and has alot of congestion.Nice places to see would be Red Rock and Valley of Fire Park or drive to the Dam.

Boulder City has alot of development as well, they do not allow gambling there so its normal with normal city codes not the in your face neon signs that are 100ft tall for any type of business.

I've been here 8 years and it's gone from good values and affordable to where it is now way overpriced for what you get, as much as California in some areas but without the nice lifestyle of California, its hot, very congested and alot of traffic issues, the quality of life is not that great since you don't have alot of healthy outdoor fun things to do either, plus people are from all over so you have a mix of cultures.

The "no outdoor activites" comment depends on your bent. I grew up sailing and water skiing on Lake Mead (there is reasonable striper fishing, if that is your gig). There is excellent mountain biking just outside of Boulder City, as well as in the Red Rock area. Ditto great day hikes in the Red Rock area. There are a number of active road bike clubs, and while it can be a little suicidal to ride in the city, there are some great long distance rides. It is a remarkably good place (given its location) for bird watching (both winged and the other). There is decent cross country skiing at Mount Charleston, but the downhill didn't use to be worth mentioning, and I'm not sure it is any better now. Farther afield, you have a 4-5 hour proximity to coastal southern California (assuming no traffic). To the northeast is Zion National Park (about 3 hours) and high mountain vacation homes outside of Cedar City, Utah (about 4 hours to get into the high country). Mammoth (sp?) Lakes, California is about 6 hours away--amazing summer hiking and winter skiing.

Also, given the board that you are reading this on--there is a track in Las Vegas, as well as one in Parump (?sp again) that host track days/drivers events.

Still, I wouldn't want to live in Vegas again. I agree with most things said above, except that Summerlin does have nice areas (but, yes, congestion, and yes, there are some older parts). But the comment above brings up a good point--Vegas is growing so quickly that, in many cases, the hot neighborhood of today is the rental row of tomorrow. There are very few areas assured of holding their cache long term, unless you are buying at the very upper end of the market.

    Sorry to hear about that.
That area has had it's fair share of accidents over the years. Theres quite a following who gather out there to observe Red Flag these days....

Jeff, man, you gotta adapt. Playin' tennis in the summers on the courts musta hardened my skin. Did have a few tennis shoes loose their soles due to the heat. I lived in Houston for 8 years, and I will take 115 (120 isn't that common, and the temp is rarely at the number for any length of time) and almost no humidity over 95 (degrees) and 95 (percent). I was visiting my parents once, went for a run, and was sitting in their backyard as the sun was setting thinking how nice it was--looked at the wall thermometer, and it was 102. Wild deal.

BTW, how long have you lived in Las Vegas?

Moved here in '96 so about 8 years, lived in Palm Springs Ca before for 4 years had a car wash, that was hot 125'+ often.

Most people here hibernate in the Summer and stay inside, run from your a/c car to a a/c bldg, otherwise I think you'll melt or turn into a lizard:)

Right now the weather is nice finally hitting mid 70s.
