I own Cali, i wanted to buy Lambo aventador, however it would be delivered in 2013 :(.

Is there a point to buy 458 Italia, insted of lambo as a racetrack car ? Does it give a massive diference from Cali ? Paying almost 300K EUR for a car that would be just a little bit better than Cali would drive me mad :)

The 458 and the California are two VERY different cars. The California is more of a Grand Tourer while the 458 is more of a sportscar. I've driven both and they are worlds apart. I say go ahead and add the 458 next to your California.

The 458 is just a beast, extremely different compared to a Cali, you should go ahead and get one, its just on another level, I'd go as far and say its the best car to own and drive. Cali is good no doubt but 458 is just out of this world. You will definately enjoy it.

As some one who has driven both cars, I would also agree that the two cars are a world apart.

Go drive a 458 and just try to say no...

One is refined the other is raw.

These 2 articles sum it up well. I owned the Cali and the 458. They are worlds apart.

The 458 makes the California redundant. To me, the 458 is as capable as if not more capable than the California. It even has a bigger trunk. It looks extremely sexy and futuristic and the cabin is a much nicer place to sit in. It is just perhaps the best supercar you can buy with your money now. I drive it daily to work and it is just eventful everyday. You can never get tired of it. It is so good. I got hit big time on the Cali but the 458 is brining a smile to me every day. I used to drive the Cali but then I would look at other's 458 and I know deep down inside, she's the one. The look is just pure sex on wheels and it's a worker and a looker. I would highly recommend you taking on one even if it means trading in your California. It is superb. The 458's engine noise, drive train, acceleration, are just eons ahead of other models.

Thank you for your post, however i can't trade my Cali. I live in Easter Europe and our roads quality is just a joke. I can use Cali everyday, no problems. However people who own 458 told me you need to plan your route, use it only on weekends when roads are empty, etc.

It's winter now, so i have no rush. I guess i'm going to check Lambo Aventador anyway.

Calitalia, I have followed your musings about the Cali since I have been interested in this car for one year now and I am in the process of speccing my car. I don't see where you talk about ownership of the Cali. How long did you actually own the car? In a perfect world with perfect roads and perfect people, most would rather quickly choose the 458 over the Cali (except those like me who want to carry small children in the back seats). However, I think very few will argue that you will drive the Cali much more than the 458 simple for practicality reasons. Just like they say, the best camera is the one you have one your person when a kodak moment presents itself...

I currently have a Cali and am speccing a 458. I intend to trade the Cali in. I love the Cali, but as said, the 458 is "out of this world." I too have 2 small children (5&7). Nevertheless, even that young, they are a tight fit, quite tight. I have long legs so i must have my seat quite far back. Have you seen the space between the rear seat and the driver's seat when it is slid far back? Nada. So, I figured the Panamera is to carry the fam. 458 it is!

we have not seen the new 599 yet.... too early to tell. 458 is not on the same plane as the Aventador anyway. :D

two totally distinct cars. If I have no kids, I would have gotten the 458 instead of the Cali... But, this does not mean the Cali is no good. It is my perfect Ferrari GT! No other GT comes close... not even by a thousand mile. :D

I have both. I had my 458 first and then my Cali and honestly I like the Cali better. It has twice the miles on it as the 458 even though the 458 is a year older. You need to drive one and then decide.

The 458 is an amazing driving car; the best I have ever driven, but I am not a race car driver.

I get the fantastic Ferrari driving experience in the California in a more easy to use package. The California is more comfortable, the controls are easier to use, you sit up higher. I have had 3 people in it in a pinch, and the top comes down when it is nice out.

This topic is going in the wrong direction. I asked if i should be 458 as addition to Cali, not as a replacement !!.

IMHO comparing Cali and 458 is pointless, since both cars have diferent purpose. I'd like to know if i feel a massive diference when driving 458, cos if it's just a little bit faster and just a little bit better to handle.

I'm sure Aventador is awesome, the specs are just mindblowing.

Totally agree with you regarding the topic going in the wrong direction.

I think having the 2 cars would be an amazing thing. I haven't driven yet the Aventador but I hear it's amazing....but not sure how great it is as a track car mostly.
I have a Cali and if I could I would definitely buy a 458 as a track car instead of an Aventador. The 458 is really mind blowing and so rewarding to drive. You could also consider a McLaren as a track car ;-)

    Agree.

I suggest anyone saying that you will drive the Cali more truly own a 458 for a weekend. The car is more usable, more practical and more trunk space. I am 6"2 and a half and the rear seats are not practical. The 458 is practical and more so than Cali. Then that's just me.

Buy one then if you can afford both. The 458 is very usable but if you plan to keep the Cali, perhaps then you should consider the Aventador. I am not into the Lambo styling.

I do find Ferrari really sticking to the original key in the FOB turn and press the Start Engine button event. For having a keyless go (which is nothing high tech anyway your run of mill VW Hyundai would offer this), I think Ferrari is not going to offer it on 458, FF and or 599 replacement. I don't know why but I find keyless go a good feature.

Re: 2 generations ahead of Ferrari, perhaps in using a carbon structure but if you want tech, the MP4-12c seems to be 2 generations ahead of the Aventador with all this wifi update.

All in all, re: The Aventador, it has the original Lambo 80s/90s look with LEDs. I actually find it very striking and stunning. Look wise, I still prefer the 458 Italia revolutionary no groove no hole no air inlet (minimalism) design. I think it is more updated and more modern than any supercar. If you take a close look, the MP4-12c also has the side grooves like R8, Aventador, Gallardo and that's a very consistent 80s and 90s look (like 355 with the side grooves). Surprisingly, 458 has taken a completely different approach with a body that has very little grooves and holes I like that. Flowy. However, no doubt, the Aventador is STRIKING and it stuns you. The digital display is quite cool (despite Merc S has had it for a long long time)...I would love to own one one day... but it is not very usable to me... not as much as my 458.

You are in HK do I remember right?

In Europe there is nowhere near this mass dumping you are talking about.

I have a Cali and I find it much more usable than the 458 which is an amazing machine. I don't understand how you can find a bigger boot in the 458 compared with the Cali....

I am 6ft3 and can fit relatively easily my 2 kids in the back seats. Obviously not as comfortable as I would without them in the back but more than good for 1 or 2 hour drive.

Anyway....back to the subject once again....the 458 would be an amazing addition to a Cali as they are completely different cars and you will enjoy them in a very different way.

Since you want the aventador as well I suggest you wait for the aventador roadster and buy a 458 till then. I too wanted an Aventador but fell for the 458. However once the roadster version is out I think I might switch. It will look unbelievable

The more Ferraris you have in your stable the better. You need to drive one and decide for yourself. There is a big difference in driving dynamics but as far as fun to drive on the road is concerned, I do not think there is that much of a difference. If you are going to put it on the track then you will probably love the 458.

The must have Italians I have in my collection are the California and my Alfa 8C. I am on the list or pre-list for the new 599 replacement and the 458 may go in on trade, I have not decided.
