Wish me luck because I'm gonna need it. 6 hours in and I want to KILL someone. I found out my mom has cancer (heavy smoker) this past week and a friend/fan of mine died @ 30 from cancer (non-smoker) this past week as well.

I'm doing it for them. And these patches don't have enough nic for me!!!!! I literally feel like eating one of them.

good luck, i was able to quit a while back as well. the three day hump, after that it's smooth sailing. within about 2-3 months after that, the nicotine clears out of your system. i did it cold turkey, and have had a few since then, and now am going to attempt cutting it out of my system for good. once again, best of luck to you, it can be done!

I quit about three months ago. The phrase you are looking for is:

    I don't smoke

I still have to cheerfully remind myself of this fact several times a week, but it's easier that way. The best thing to remember is that the actual craving only lasts a few minutes. You can outlast the craving. It's the habit that makes it hard to quit. And that's no harder than quitting a habit like biting your fingernails.

Hang in there, and remember that after 72 hours, it's not even a physical addiction any more. You can beat it. You already have.

    Just remember:

    YOU DON'T SMOKE!

Good luck man!! You are going to need it alright!! My mate went 'cold turkey' 2 years ago and hasnt touched them since. His Mum died of lung cancer in 2004. :( When she died, he threw the smokes away. Very admirable thing to do IMO.
I have another friend that will just smoke himself to death. He WILL NOT STOP smoking. He just cant. He smokes a pack a day and more sometimes. Also a very expensive habit for him. :( Life is too short as it is, let alone killing yourself with cigarettes day in day out. I occasionally smoke a cigar. Maybe once a year and thats enough for me. Sorry to hear about your Mum mate. Take care buddy. :)

    I'm a pack a day guy. Uh....was.

The cravings last around 10 minutes for me. I just drink a whole bunch of water or green tea.

    You could move to cigars.

You dont inhail them and if you do you throw up a lung or something. You get the nic from the smoke being in your mouth.

It's weird all of the sudden. I started going to the gym about 4 weeks ago (time permitting - last week I didn't get there at all, damnit) and have lost probably 12 lbs. Big changes in my diet, too. No garbage, except for one day a week when I eat whatever I want (Hooters!). Now I'm quitting smoking. Grew my hair back, too. At least what's left of it.

Looks like my new career is going to be gangbusters and lots of major opportunity. Outside of my mom and my friend, maybe this was the trigger? Lots of things seem possible now that didn't before. Seems like my self-esteem is growing by the day. Anyone else ever experience this?

This smoking thing is going to be the hardest I think. I'm putting this thread here to keep the pressure on. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

Perhaps well-intentioned, but bad advice. The risks of cancer are not reduced by smoking cigars even if you don't inhale. Oral cancer being a significant risk. I've diagnosed 3 cases of oral cancer. (I'm a dentist.) One was the mother of a good friend of mine. She died of the disease, and it was a miserable way to go. REALLY miserable.

Nicotine and the other chemical in smoke do a number on your entire body. I can tell a smoker as soon as they walk in my office. They are aged beyond their years - SIGNIFICANTLY. Their skin has a "look" to it. It affects their eyes. It affects the mouth, and no, I'm not talking about staining teeth. I'm talking about the tongue, the gums, the roof of their mouth, etc. They STINK. I can smell them as soon as I walk in the room. There are SO many serious health consequences beyond the well-known lung effects. Peripheral artery disease. Increased risks of stroke and heart attack. And, on and on and on.

Congrats on becoming a non-smoker, Remix. It's hands-down the best thing you will have ever done for yourself.

I quit in sept 1984...after smoking for 20 yrs and trying to quit for the last 5 yrs of that.

The first three days are the hardest, then the next 2 weeks, and after that you're going to be OK, but cannot light up ever again under any circumstance if you want to stay off.

Get rid of those nico patches asap...there's a day where you're going to have to go cold turkey anyway...the sooner you get it over with the better.

What finally motivated me to quit was looking through some old medical books and seeing the horribly disfiguring results of operations performed for tobacco-related head and neck cancers.

Remix, good for you. This is the single best thing you can do for your long term health. Unfortunately, I spend the vast majority of my day every day treating the ill effects of smoking. Quitting will be the single most difficult thing you ever do, but so worth it!

There are a few things to consider to help you through this. First, you appear have already cleared the first hurdle. You have decided you want to quit. There are so many people who think that they ought to quit, but they really do not want to quit. Until someone wants to quit one is doomed to failure. Second, you need a cheerleader. No not some hot babe, but someone who will be there to cheer you on when you are doing well and someone you can call on during the tough times - someone to keep you honest. Third, I agree to get rid of the patches. This is just transfering one form of nicotine to another. We have recently learned that there are receptors in the brain where nicotine acts - same type of process ans coke and other highly addictive drugs, but even more powerful. This explains the powerful addictive properties. Until the nicotine gets out of your system and these receptors get down regulated again (takes time) the cravings will be there. There is a new drug on the market which blocks these receptors and has shown some very good results. If you are haveing a tough time you may want to talk to your doctor about this. And finally, do not give up. Relapses are common. If you do fall off the wagon the most important thing is to not give up and get back on the wagon as quickly as possible. Try to learn why you failed and learn from that event. There is no majic here it really comes down to you and a will to quit.

As you have said, you have some good incentives in your life to keep you motivated. Use that to your advantage. Best of luck.

    Steve

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. A few weeks ago a friend educated me about cigars. We decided it might be beneficial to learn how to smoke one for social and business purposes. There is also a coolness factor surrounding them.

Honestly, it was not as enjoyable as I was expecting - especially for the money you pay (we bought Cubans). And again, being around smokers is not pleasant; second-hand smoke is awful. I anticipate being able to count the number I smoke per year on one hand...

    You're a heart surgeon, Steve?

Good for you!! It's hell quitting, but you'll love yourself so much more when you do.

Always remember, mixing is better than smoking :)

BTW, if you ever wanna mix on an analog console, let me know.

I have 28 patches which will be trimmed to a smaller size every day until they are unnecessary.

I had some luck with this kind of thing getting off of Effexor a few years back. Want to talk about a nasty thing to get away from? Effexor was bad. I think physicians should warn those who go on some of these things how bad they really are to quit. Anyway, I broke the caps up and started measuing the contents and took a little less every day until I could walk away. That took a month. I see this as no different.
