Buy a QP of some kind to get the nicotine off your mind! I know what you all are thinking... but the logic behind this is that you can substitute one addiction for another, with the goal of hopefully cancelling out the first addiction in the process. I don't know though as I don't smoke. My only vice these days are triple lattes!
I'm working on stopping smoking again for the 3millionth time but I do have to ask a question about Effexor. What problems did you have with it? I just got put on it about a week ago. I can't sleep (and I'm sure the lack of nicotine isn't helping) but what were your problems coming off the stuff? Congrats on quitting the cigs. Best of luck to you!
We need an update on this thread...Remix? others? I stopped 5 days ago, cold turkey although I do have a brand new pill my doctor has put me on, kind of an oral patch. I've had virtually no cravings. It is called Chantix, anyone heard of it? It is a 1.0mg 12 week dosage. Like I said, virtually no cravings and when I have had them, they have been minimal. I've been smoking for 20+ years.
Just think about this: A pack costs around $3 right? So lets say that you smoke 2 packs a day. So $6 a day. 6x365=2190 You save about $2190 a year not smoking!* *that is if the pack cost $3 and you smoke 2 packs a day, but still you get the point!
Still smoke-free...haven't smoked since my original post and that last half-pack of cigs is still in my car. I have massive cravings at times but they pass. Been around tons of people smoking since, no effect other than my clothes stunk afterward. Old habits die hard. I always want to grab one when I go outdoors for any reason. This is an old habit. I stay indoors more now, ask for smoke-free hotel rooms, etc. I quit the patches cold turkey after about a week ... it's better not to have a crutch because that's just one more thing you have to quit using. The whole "get past the first 3 days and it's all fine" is total BS. RMX
Keep up the good work!! My grandfather died of lung cancer last year and he wished he quit but by then it was too late. Erik
Cheap smokes in USA. Here they cost AU$11+. You guys get it too easy. We get screwed on EVERYTHING imported here to Australia.
May 1 and still smoke free. I gained around 15 lbs after, however, I've been in the gym for 4 weeks nearly every morning and the weight is coming off ever so slowly. I do think my mind is sharper... I still crave a smoke, especially after dinner. RMX
Congrats....... Seriously, I think it's great. I talked to my brother-in-law about quiting and he looked at me like I had two heads. Why don't you trash that last pack? Out of sight out of mind...
Congrats! I've tried to quit smoking a few times, but that's too hard! But i still want to give up my baddest habit...
Nah...they're a reminder that life is full of temptation and nothing is ever freaking easy. The cost of a pack of cigs is not a barrier if I wish to start up again. The fact they're no longer in my center console would only serve as a slight hiccup in the way of going out and buying new ones. In the short term I ended up with some high blood pressure and some weight gain. Most of that is being mitigated now. RMX
I'm a pharmacy tech. There is a drug out there called Chantix. It works. I have people everyday telling me they couldn't quit without it.
Congrats. Smoking stinks, I hate coming home from a bar and my clothes just stink. About a month ago I quit chewing Tabbaco. Probably worse than smoking. I always liked doing it because of the buzz but its bad for you so I just decided Im done. I was driving and threw my half full can out the window and have never had one since. I haven't really had that many urges to have one. Im now on a mostly healthy lifestyle now. Im eating better, I've been in the gym every day for the past month, and I cut out the tabbaco. Only "bad" thing I do is have a few beers, or other alcohol. I also cut back on the Caffinee almost no coffee or soda. Good luck man.
Props for giving it a go. I quit 2.5 years ago after smoking for nearly 18 years. My fiancee & I quit together but the only way we succeeded was w/Wellbutrin, also known as Zyban. We tried every other method save for hypnosis, and nothing worked for us. Wellbutrin staved off all cravings - even the mental/psychological ones - for both of us. Easiest "quit" ever IMHO. For the first few months it was weird not having a smoke after dinner, w/morning coffee, or when at a bar/club, but that habit broke easily. The only downside was the weight gain - I put on 30-40 lbs., which I lost over the following year. But, I read on a stop smoking site that even w/weight gain of 25+ lbs. a person is still healthier than w/smoking but being lighter. I was able to get Wellbutrin from my general physician, and had my health insurance cover the cost (minus my co-pay). Even if I would've had to pay for it, the results are worth the price of admission. Worth looking into if other avenues break down. Stay strong!
Hardest habit ever to break. I rarely have a smoke before early afternoon, and I have been on and off for the last 5 years. But this is a great thread and reading about RMX, I am going to give it a shot from here.
I have just read this entire thread and I am shocked that Chantix was only mentioned once. I have tried everything!!! Gum, patched, welbutrin, fake cigarette thing and everything else out there. Take my word, NOTHING WORKS AS WELL AS CHANTIX! No side effects, easy to take and after 2 weeks, I had no urge to smoke. According to my doctor, you are supposed to continue to smoke for a week after you start the perscription. After 4 days, I tried to smoke and couldn't event get through the cigarette. Everyother smoking sessation product on the market is some sort of mood altering medication or just niccotine replacement. Chantix is different. It some how blocks the chemical that makes the brain crave niccotine. This stuff worked so well, I am going to buy stock in Pfizer...
I started with patches and just went cold turkey after a few days. That is the ONLY way to do it IMO. I'd been a pack and a half a day smoker for 25 years! I still have most of those patches you see in the first post of this thread. It was a living hell for two months, I **** you not. Two months is the hump, not three days. That's total BS. Anyway, you have to stop the patches at some point and that's withdrawal in and of itself! RMX
