Way to go! Everybody’s different. Patches worked for me, after trying lots of different things. You’re right about the hump – it’s months rather than weeks, but it does eventually get better. You’ll never quite lose the craving but it definitely becomes manageable.

You want real incentive to not start back...smoking causes ED as you get older...look it up...so, if you start back smoking... in a few years a cigarette will be the only FIRM cylindrical object you will be able to hold in your hand...

    Very well put Frank!

Remix, we are all so proud of you. How the food taste now? Amazing right? Your sense of taste and smell get 100 times better, you feel better, you certainly will smell better. Nothing worse than smoker smell, ewwwwww!

GOOD FOR YOU MAN! If you were closer I'd buy you a Guiness!

True that. I quit smoking in January 2007, and the most difficult part of quitting was that little bit of depression you get after you stop taking any sort of stimulant (i.e. nicotine). Whenever I felt the urge to smoke, I would go for a short walk, or do something that would take my mind off of having a cigarette. GL to anyone else that wants to quit.

Well, heading up to the one year mark. Looking back it went kinda fast. A few things about my quitting:

    1. I had some physical manifestations occur after I quit, namely high blood pressure, gaining 25lbs, dizzy spells from panic attacks (which I never had prior). Almost all of these have been mitigated with the exception of the weight, which is now slowly coming off due to an aggressive low carb, low sugar, high protein diet my doctor put me on. I noticed my metabolism was so slow that spending an hour doing cardio every day for six months did nothing except help me put on weight. Back in September of 2006, before I quit, I went into the gym for three weeks and dropped eight pounds with no change in diet. Quitting really f'd up my metabolism. I've lost six lbs in the past week and a half being on this new diet.

    2. Food tastes no different to me than it did, at least as far as I can tell.

    3. I do feel somewhat healthier, but not that much different. My skin still looks the same to me.

    4. I cannot stand the smell of people who smoke now.

    5. I have cravings still. Not terrible, mind you, but they show up every once in a while.

    6. I still have that pack of cigarettes in my car.

So there you go. It can be done - cold turkey - as I dropped the patches a few days after quitting.

Congrats! I often wondered if smokers could smell others, but I suppose you have to stop smoking to get that sense of smell again without it bothering you. That's my guess at least.

Congrats on making to the year point! :)

Was this your first time to try and quit? Do you keep the pack of cigs in the car as a reminder to not go back?

Get rid of that pack in your car. It is time. You aren't a smoker anymore, so why have a pack of cigarettes in your car? Kind of like, when you break up with a girlfriend...it is best to get rid of the pictures and any memorabilia that might remind you of her. You aren't with her anymore...time to throw out her toothbrush and move on with life.

Remix...I remember the day you quit.

Congrats on the year! That is a huge deal, believe me.

I passed my 23rd quit anniversary in september, and am one cigarette/cigar/pipeful away from being a pack-a-day smoker again...keep that in mind as you move ahead in your smokeless new life.

Not to mention getting oxygen to body parts that don't function well without good blood flow (if you get my drift)!

Isn't it ironic how "That after cigarette" is the one most smokers think they will have the hardest time living without? :)
