A few weekends ago on a Sunday morning. I was out driving somewhere in the US on some major freeway when a cop car snuck up along side me. As I wasn't speediing. I hadn't been checking my mirrors. These two young chaps were taunting me a little bit with hand gestures and slowing down then speeding back up. I laughed thinking that I'm not falling for it. I didn't just fall off the turnnip truck. After a little more prodding. I dropped a few gears and floored it for about 7 seconds. Needless to say that whatever they had under the hood was no match for a 360. With all my not so good experiances with police. It was a nice change to see they had a sense of humor.

Legally speaking they wouldn't be able to pull you over. Instigating behavior is entrapment and all that.

    That's awesome.

Last week I had a "friendly race" with a cop for 10km or so. It was more like swerving in and out of traffic at 160km/h in a 70km/h. He had his sirens on. My car is faster than his so I just matched his speed. Some people thought it was a chase. It was fun.

My "cop race" story is more ironic than amusing.

About 20 years back, I was driving home from the office in a Massachusetts snow shower. Approaching an intersection, I noted a cop coming "code 2" (lights but no siren). I let him go by, then pulled out to go home. By coincidence, the cop wound up traveling the same route, up until I turned onto the street my house was on.

The cop was pushing it to the limits, tail sliding all over, rooster-tailing snow.

    He was in my way.

I wasn't even pushing hard, and stayed on his tail the whole way.

The cop was in an Impala. I was in an Alfa GTV-6 ... with Eagle VR summer tires. (And a 50/50 weight distro).

Since then, I've been an advocate of having a better way to get cop cars than taking discount junk boxes from a local dealer playing political favors.

(Okay, the cop wasn't an experienced rallye driver ... but that just makes it worse to turn them out in the snow in such incapable vehicles.)

A have a uncle who was pulled over when he was a young guy for excessive speeds on a city street. The family member who recounted the story didn't know what car he was in, but said a ferrari-type car. Never actually asked my uncle what he was actually driving as I don't see him very often. Anyway, the cop is going to give him a big ticket when he says to the cop, 'want to go for a spin.' And the cop said yes and my uncle, with the cop in the passenger seat peels off down the road and a few minutes drops the cop back off next to his squad car and gets off without a ticket.

i have had many run ins with the cops regarding speeding/racing etc. etc., and the one thing i found to be true, is that cops tend to be cooler when they are dealing with fast and/or rare cars.....as long as you keep your cool and respect them, they tend to take interest in the car, for most cops are in to cars, and most of the time (not always by any means-some cops are just dicks lets face it) they will let you off the hook with a warning!!!

with much practice i have become a sweet talker among cops, and it tends to work haaha

All these stories are great. You need to put a hidden camera in your cars next time. I would love to see a cop do something like that.

you made out better than i did...1992-ish, I-5, in boonies
south of San Francisco, -many- miles going 100+ in a
BMW 735, saw a 'dot' in mirror...uh-oh, no place to hide,
as miles of straight hi-visibility road...

eventually i pulled over on an exit, simmered the cop down,
best i got was written up at 85 mph, so co$t some buck$,
but coulda been lot worse...as i recall, cost $135, not
much in today's dollars, bit more back then.

I drove my dad's car through a town (legal if not below legal speed)and the cop stared at us coming from the opposite direction pulled a u-turn and came up on us ftrom behind on a two lane road about 70-75 mph. I had a wheel on the grass trying to pull over to let him through. Then he went onto a side road and was barely accelerating.

Jerk! put my mom and myself in danger.

    Woe!

I-78 is a major commuting highway btw NYC and New Jersey. It has local and express lanes separated by a grass median. One afternoon, my wife and I left the city in her shiny black Escalade to head home for our son's concert. We happened to be in the local lanes. All was well until a pickup, a van and one or two other cars went kissy-kissy about 50 yds. ahead of us. Everyone stopped. And sat. And started crossing the median to get to the express lanes, which were at least moving. My wife and I follow at least a dozen cars over the median, and there were at least a few behind us.

Exactly one car was stopped by a caped crusader who thought it was more important to write us up than to continue to the accident scene. We got the full condescending treatment too: first name, sarcasm, feh! Worst of all, I had to appear in court in ... Newark. The horror!

Mine is a little different, not really a race either, but anyway. I was in high school, I was driving my girlfriend's (now wife) new Camaro. This Thunderbird kept tailgating me, He was really close and being kind of a jerk. He didn't back off when I tapped the brake. So when I came to a stop sign on a gravel road I decided to pepper his car with rocks and leave him in the dust, well about a half mile down the road he started really gaining on me and I looked up and he had a light on his dash. It was an unmarked Sheriff... he did let me go with a warning.

some cops where stopping people for routing checks, suddenly a Mclaren F1 passed thru, the cops pulled the guy, have him show them the car, and as he was about to leave, the captain told him to do a burnout and just speed off, SO FUNNY!!!

To protect the guilty, the place has been changed.

Was on a major downtown street in a major City, when a fellow pulls up in a Corvette and gives me the "let's go" revving. I'm thinking, my clutch costs more than your entire car, but ... well ... shrug of shoulders ... OK. So, we light up the rear tires, drag down the middle of downtown for a few blocks and pull up at the next red light. He asks if I want to go again. I'm thinking we just tempted fate enough, so I tell him, "No, there might be a few cops around looking for us right now." He holds up a badge and says, "Don't worry about it." Fastest commute I've ever had.

I have the highest respect for most of the local PD. It still amasses me how many of these folks are car enthusiasts that enjoy the cars as much as we do. The standing joke around our area is that we are a real trouble spot as there is often numerous squad cars parked outside the shop and locals think we are always in trouble. Reality is a number of the officers simply enjoy mulling over the cars where they feel welcome. That respect goes both ways and I make sure that the test drives are done in an appropriate area. There is more than one officer that has thrown a wind breaker on over his uniform and gone for a F-40 ride. There is one cute female officer that just had to sit in a Ferrari and was happy to remove and hand me her gun belt prior to doing so. A friendly smile and a nod next time you pass a squad car will let them know they are appreciated. You will be surprised the new friends you will meet. Put yourself in their shoes, far from an easy job! Supprisingly most of the officers could care less about lisc. plates, how they are displayed, sound levels, etc as it simply creates a lot of BS paper work for them at the end of the day. I sleep quite well at night knowing the shop is VERY WELL watched by folks that simply share a common interest.

I did it in GA two month ago on a highway that has a 65 mph speed limit with stoplights. We were first in line. I was on my way to a track weekend at Road Atlanta in my Porsche. Light turned green. He stomped the big, heavy Ford patrol car. I started off barely keeping up but remaining off boost in first gear. When I went to second, I hit the boost and lurched a number of lengths ahead. Then went to third for an instant and more distance. At the speed limit I let off. After a few seconds he sped by and gave me a thumbs up. I figured I was safe because I did not break traction and did not exceed the speed limit.

Here in Kingsport, a cruiser made a U-turn and followed me into a parking lot to look at my 328. Nice chap.

I was parked outside a sandwich place one day and when I come out there is a cop sitting in his squad car next to my 360. I walked up and he got out and we talked cars and motorcycles for about 45 minutes and we actually became friends. We've gone for a couple of drives, dirt biking, etc. Cool guy who knows more about the local Ferrari community than I do because he catches them speeding, but always lets them off. He tells a story of seeing an enzo. He was ticketing some SUV and he hears the enzo coming and he watches as this guy blows past him and the pulled over SUV. As the enzo rips past he sees the driver looking at him and shrinking into the seat. He later met the guy and befriended him as well. So far, (knocking on wood) my cop experiences have been good.

Rush hour traffic at a stop light on a local highway. The squad car was first in the right lane and I had a non-cat, Capristo shod 360 in the left lane. He reved his squad car and I reved the 360 after which i looked in the rear view mirror. All of the folks behind us were laughing hysterically. Never did race as we were in traffic and I had a customers car. A simple funny gesture like that officer made gave everyone behind us a chuckle for the day.
The cop that lives next to us had the privilage to be chosen as a motorcycle escort for the President when he was in town Friday. Funny stories about the motorcycle cops trying to catch up with the limo and the Secret Service after holding an intersection's traffic. The local cops were trying to figure out how to ticket the limo and the SS SUV's. Great photos and memories for him and his family.
