Hi Folks, today I thought I'd try my hand at alloy wheel cutting on an old pattern lathe.
Well actually I've used this lathe before and so we are old friends.
The wheels in question are off of a 458 and whilst on the last wheel of 4, I decided to film it on my phone for you good folks here, so appologies for the bad camera work.

    Anyway here is the video:
    https://youtu.be/x3a131-V3DQ

Also I removed Katos wheels and put them in to be refurbed as well. The only thing now is that I can't decide on what to do with them. The thought is to have an American chrome rim with either a Gold, Silver, Dark Grey or Gloss Black centre.
Have a look at the pictures and see what you think.......
    All the best Bell ;-)

Hey don't worry guys, the Maserati was just sniffing Katos exhausts, you know that's how these Italian cars recognise each other.... they all do it you know, it's just that you don't always see them.

Anyway, many thanks for the feedback chaps :)
Much as I like the heritage of gold, I'm going to whimp out on that one, it does look cool but it might look like I'm trying too hard.
Silver with the chrome finish is my favourite classic 80s look, but I do just want to be a little different.
Black is out because you loose the classic 5 spoke Ferrari look.
So I'm going for the mid silver, because you can still see the 5 spokes and it will contrast the American chrome rims, I hope...
Anyway that's the theory, and mid silver should have the added bonus of hiding all that brake dust!
Many thanks folks for your input here, hope you like the video of me turning a 458 wheel....I was sweating a little whilst doing that, trying not to think how much I'd have to pay if I messed it up.
I will post more pics tonight....

Got the wheels on the car last night, it was getting dark so I quickly got the car out from under the trees and into slightly better light, however the shots are a bit dark so appologies.
    Hopefully you get the idea.
I will do some more shots when I get the chance, but I am pleased with the results. My only concern was not to modernise the car at all, I really want to preserve that retro look.

Yes I must admit I like stock too, but since we have 2 Mondials I thought I'd try something new.
When I first put them on the car I thought I'd made a mistake and I didn't like them but everybody who's actually seen Kato now absolutely loves them. They have really grown on me and if I could go back to stock I think I'd keep them as they are now.
I really like the gold but for me it was more of a gamble that could either look amazing or be awful.
The main thing that concerns me is that I want the wheels to look 80s and looking at the split rims of that period I do feel they are still of that era. Ultimately for me the best wheels I've seen aftermarket are the F40 style split rims but I'm not keen on much else.
There are a couple of folks here who's split rims look increadible on the Mondial.
My 'new' wheels do look way better in life than in the pictures to be fair.

I like the gold too and it technically is Ferrari heritage, but I don't know that a Mondial can carry it off like a 308, maybe lowering the car a little would help.
You know I've been using Kato all weekend and I love the look of these wheels now.
As Emily said, it really sharpens up the old lad, and I have to agree.
It think next up is to drop 1 inch off the total ride height and then maybe get some split rims as posted above.
Keeping it standard is nice but Kato is my toy and so I kind of like to experiment with him.
Cavello will always be kept original, and anything I do to Kato will be a subtle twist on the original and with taste I hope.
