Ross Brawn has hailed Jenson Button as a class racer and says he was wrong not to sign him at Ferrari.

The design genius reckons the 29- year-old, who has won the opening two races of the season at a canter, is "revitalized" now that he is at the wheel of a winning car.

Amazingly, in a sport crammed with towering egos, Brawn says Button may have been overlooked by Ferrari because of his humble attitude.

At least twice in the last decade he has been linked with the Italian legends, while Brawn was head of car design, but it came to nothing.

"That might have been a mistake," admitted Brawn. "It's just so difficult to judge people. Jenson is a pretty low-profile guy in many ways.

He doesn't bang his own drum and he gets on with things discreetly and quietly.

"It's a bit like his driving style, very smooth and very controlled, so I am very happy."

Brawn was the designer behind the cars that made Michael Schumacher champion a record seven times.

Like Schumacher, Button has comprehensively put team-mate Rubens Barrichello in the shade with two pole starts and two wins to have a five-point lead over the Brazilian after just two races.

Button has been criticised for a playboy lifestyle during the dark years at Honda but these days, Brawn says, he is a passionate triathlete and superlative racer. "He is working diligently with the engineers and has been revitalized," he added

    Go Button!

Next press release will say getting rid of Rubens was Ferrari's downfall.

    All the drivers are good.
    Except possibly Picket.
    Nakajima is so-so.
Not impressed with Buemmi ( I know the spelling is wrong ) We'll see in 6 months.

 Win a coupe of races and people go a little silly. A little surprised at Ross for saying such a thing about JB, on the back of two wins in a brilliant designed car. Who would JB have replaced, Rubins, Massa?
Either way the Brits are rocking in F1:)

Five point spread over Rubens is hardly "in the shade." It's funny that Brawn is talking about Button's low key "doesn't bang his own drum" when there's a thread vilifying the guy for making the MS comment. I guess if Button had made more comments like that he might have been at Ferrari.

If and when the "big" teams catch up, it will be interesting to see what he has to say. He rarely shot his mouth off at Ferrari and maybe he is doing so now because he knows it may not last long. That car is so much stronger that maybe they would be winning by a bigger margin if Kimi, Alonso, Masa, Kubica or Vettel were in the cockpit.

So much for living in the past, Welcome to 2009 or at least to April 13th when they will take away all of Brawn GP's points and ban them for 14 races. they will reinstate Hambones 4th place, because the stewarts lied which would make Truly the winner in Australia and hambone 2nd. Then Steven will hit the Irish Lottery and all will be right with the world. :D

He is just magic to watch in the cockpit, he is so smooth its a pleasure to watch.

I know he has a great car under him, but his technique is perfection. I used to think he was rubbish (although I did notice his smoothness in the BAR) he has proven he is good.

Jenson would have certainly have been better than Rubens was at Ferrari. Just look at how much better he is now when given a decent car. I know this is a lot of Ifs but IF Ferrari had signed Button and kept him I think we see Ferrari winning the 2006 WCC and Schumacher as a 8-time WDC, that's a rather large IF though.

What Ross forgets is, had he signed Button to Ferrari and had Button done well at Scuderia, he wouldn't have Button driving for him now at Team Brawny.

Wouldn't it be interesting if a couple years down the road he says the same of Bruno Senna? ;-)
