i was flipping through ebay, and noticed a seller w/a silver cloud for 9500! so, i sent him an email, expecting something that wasn't running, or in need of major tlc. i got one back a couple of hours later, he has to sell due to divorce and has relocated to hungary. in my original email, i offered to go to troy mo (about 1-2 hours away from where i'm at) to look at the car, and in his response he offered to post pics. where do i go from here? here are the emails:

    Me:
hello, im definitely interested in the silver cloud you have on ebay.
    what
    > kind of mechanical condition is it in? id even be willing to come
    drive down
    > to troy to view the car in person, if that would be possible. im just
    a
    > little nervous because the price seems awfully low.
    > thanks,
    > scott

    Him:
    Hello,

If you are interested in the car please read this e-mail carefully!

The car is still for sale, but not for long, I hope. I've removed the
add, because I had the impression that I already have a buyer, but he
    did not have the money.

The price is $9,500. Anyway, the car is in perfect working condition,
with no rust or bondo on it and a laser-straight body. My experienced
technician has fully checked the car and gave it a special high
rating, it has a CLEAN and CLEAR TITLE, great history and without any
mechanical problems, safety check and pre-delivery inspection, along
with a fresh servicing before I ship or deliver the vehicle.

My problem is that in the meanwhile, i got divorced, and I had to move
with my kids in Hungary where I got a new job as a construction
engineer. I've left the car crated in a warehouse back in US and my
intention was to have it shipped here, but when I found out about the
very high import duties here, I have made up my mind and decided to
sell the vehicle. So, if you want to buy it, I am covering the cost
for shipping and will include insurance for the trip. The delivery
will take between 12 and 15 business days (with insurance and 30 days
    return policy).

The payment will be completed using eBay secure pay services o we can
    both be protected!

Let me know if you are interested. I have reserved the car for you,
but I will need your answer in the next couple of days.

    Thank you,

P.S: If you want pictures of the car please let me know!

His ad is off of ebay - a huge tip off for me!

Sounds a little fishy, a construction engineer in Hungary that is a very weird place to move your family too.

Definitely a scammer, you can have some fun with him, but be careful of attachments he sends you. I know a few people that have had the scammer send them "pictures", like 5 or 6 of them, but one of the pics will be a virus. So you don't want to inadvertently install some kind of keystroke logger or something on your computer.

Nice. These scumbags won't stop at anything. I'd just forget it. Sounds like somebody ratted him out on ebay anyway.

Yeah, don't accept any pictures unless you have an e-mail that scans them for viruses first, like yahoo.

This guy's a scammer. 12-15 business days to ship a vehicle? Right.

    new email from him:
I'm offering you a secure deal and the car will be inspected on
    arrival by eBay staff.

Here is how the process works:

    - you give me your shipping address,
    - I start a transaction on eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection,
    - they send you the payment instructions,
    - you send the money into eBay trust account,
    - they confirm me that they received the funds,
    - I ship the car,
    - you receive the car,
    - they send me the money.

Here's a few words on how this transaction is going to be handled: the
most important thing in all my activity here is that I am affiliated
with eBay Motors where I have a purchase protection account for up to
$20,000. eBay will take care of the financial part by holding the
payment in their bank account managed by an eBay representative (they
will provide you with that information in the purchase invoice which
you will receive from them). They will hold the money until the car is
delivered to you, with properly executed title. If the car is not like
described you will have to ship it back in 30 business days on my
expense, but I am sure that you will love it.

In order to move forward I will need the following info from you so I
can set up a new transaction case through eBay:
    1. full name
    2. shipping address

EBay will get in touch with you for further details and instructions.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Darrell

where do i go from here? what should be my next step?

That's where the bogus escrow comes into play, I believe. EBay doesn't initiate transactions. When the guy sends the eBay instructions, forward them to their fraud department. Nothing will probably come of it, but you can only go so far without risking something. Otherwise, arrange a personal delivery to the guy. Always a good opportunity for an FChat get together:)

Also to prove this is an obvious scam, they guy could easily set up a private auction that only you could bid on. All this "e-bay will get in touch with you with further instructions" is bull****.

    F'n scammers.

Yea, it appears the scam here is the escrow thing. He spoofs an escrow department that you're supposed to send the money too. Once you do it disappears. I'd notify ebay. They claim they're cracking down on fraud.

i'm not opening up a single attachment from him, i don't care if it's the olsen twins naked between a veyron and a mclaren f1. well...maybe then, :D
but back to the topic, i'm still waiting to hear back from him. i sent him another email reiterating the fact i'm willing to drive down and personally view the car, but haven't gotten a response yet. once i do, i'll post it here, but i think i'm going to need help plotting the next move.

Tell him you'll pay in person and take the car with you. Forget the bogus shipping. A Cloud would not be hard to trailer home.

    "Ebay Representative", ya right!

"Crated, in a warehouse", You'd spend $500 on the lumber alone to crate a Cloud.

Don't accept any incoming stuff from "Ebay". That's not how they do it.

It would be great to get him to send a picture of himself holding a sign with the name of UroTrash's hometown (Wanker).

    new update:
The shipping is already payed by me and the only way we can do this
deal is through eBay! In this way we are bough protected: you have the
protection that you won't loose your money and receive the car and me
that I'll get my money after I sell!

I will get paid after you get the car and you know that I can't take
the money from them without your approval.

As I said before, the money will be keept in to a trusted account,
until the car is delivered to you, with properly executed title.

You can't see the car because is in a sealed container that can be
opened only in my presence! Like you I have another 50 buyers! What if
all came and test the car or arrange their own shipping and one of
them broke it? I'll be the one who pays! I bet that you do the same in
    my place!

Please reply with your full name and shipping address and I will start
    the transaction asap!

You can get more info from them, not from me.

This scam is similar to the Nigerian scams all over email. It must work once in a while or they would stop.

I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a Porsche Cayenne about $20K below blue book. Pics looked great, etc. Sure, it was too good to be true, but I had to ask. The guy came up with the same basic story, except he was suddenly forced to travel to Miami and the car was still in Santa Rosa, CA. He was very busy and wasn't going to be able to return for a while, but the good news was that he had contracted with ebay to handle the transaction and I could meet the ebay rep after I wired ebay the money. I could then go get a PPI, review records and drive the car. The ebay rep would hold the funds in escrow, so everything was secure. Yeah, right. Ad had been removed from Craigslist when I went back to check.

the way i figure it, i'm going to have my fun for a day or 2 more, then i'm going to basically tell him i've known all along, and forward all of his emails to ebay, although i'm sure nothing will be done about it granted the ads are already off of there, and it'd be next to impossible to track him down and stop him from posting them up again. but help me! i need to know what to send him next

Keep F'n with him. Ask him how he's going to ship a car that's in a sealed container when he's not there to verify contents? Tell him that someone could have filled it with something else or it might not even exist ;) The shipping company will insist on knowing what their sending. Also ask to talk to the manager of the warehouse where the car supposedly is, to verify. The guy will just run out of lies to tell you and move on.
