Hey all, When my GTSi is idling I can hear a distinct "chirping" noise coming from somewhere. It's done this ever since I've owned the car and I haven't heard it on other 308s. All of my belts are tight, only thing I can think is maybe an alternator pulley bearing, etc...going bad?? Anyone ever experienced this??
Does it sound like a VW bug? You have the dreaded tailpipe chirp. The exhaust tips have a tube with holes in each one and they whistle (peek in the end with a flashlight, you will see it). To fix, you take a small square of SS sheet metal, roll it into a tube and stuff it in there so it expands and stays. One is each tip. Problem solved. Search in Tech and there are dimensions. I bought the ones I put in our Mondial from a guy on eBay for $20 and thought I got ripped, but it was easier than hunting down the material. That isnt the worst though...a local fchatter here in New England took his car to the dealer complaining of this and they did the same thing and charged him $250!!! (I'm not kidding). Birdman
Jonathan, Thanks a million, I think you hit the nail right on the head!!! So if I switch to a Tubi or Ansa Sport, this should abate the problem, yes? Cheers, Aaron '82 GTSi '83 400iA
Yes, but that's an expensive solution! Just roll up some sheet metal and shove it in there! Fixed! Birdman P.S. Listen to a Tubi before you buy one. They are not for everyone. I do not like them at all.
I'm in love with mine - aurally and cosmetically. But it is subjective, and maybe not ideal for extended freeway cruising. It is a lot of money you'll never see again unless you plan to keep the car long term. But: no chirping birds here!
I had an Ansa Sport on my GT4 and I thought it wasn't bad, sound-wise. Probably just a hair less expensive than the Tubi as well. Although, I'm pretty satisfied with the stock system, so in go the rolls of steel!! Cheers, Aaron '82 GTSi '83 400iA
I just bought 2 tubes of that high temp exhaust sealer. Spread it around the inside of the tips and the chirp goes away for about $10 and 10 minutes of work. I did this 2 years ago and it worked great. Easy and cheap!
