I’ve always loved watches and cars, going back to being a young boy. IIRC I got my first watch at age 7 (Timex). I also begged my patents for a stopwatch for Christmas at around that age, loved that thing. I’ve worn a watch everyday of my life, literally. When wearing my watches on metal bracelets I ever wear them when asleep (not ones with leather straps). I’ve also always loved cars, especially special cars (Ferrari, Porsche, Corvettes, Rolls, etc), and really went off the deep end for them when I accumulated enough money.
Now I’m slimming down my car collection since my love for cars has been waning lately (very few modern cars excite me, and absolutely nothing on my “wish list”) yet my love for watches has been increasing and adding to my collection with many watches on my “wish list.” Watches are so personal, and with you always; cars not as much.
I was thinking that if money became an issue and I had to raise capital by selling things, the cars would go long before my watches.

Is anyone else here on this auto enthusiasts website feeling similarly?
Is it that the car world experience seems to be souring with EVs, a war on speeders, worsening road congestion, ever increasing regulations? But at the same time the nostalgia and artistry of exquisite mechanical watch making is becoming more appealing in this ever more digital world?

Interesting to read about the Timex and stopwatch. I had the same thing too!!!

I still have a strong passion toward cars but my interests in cars (and watches) has drifted toward vintage.

Modern cars no longer interest me and, in fact, I am in the process of buying yet another vintage car (this time a track rat). Cars have had a fundamental shift in functionality which doesn’t appeal to me in my “hobby” cars (but, yes, for a multi-hour commute across State I will take a modern car with its adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, etc, any day).

Watches though, I am okay with old and new but I think it is because watches have not drifted the way cars have (I do not own a “smart” watch). Even quartz watch makers have new interesting watch features that appeal to me (e. g. Citizen: Ecodrive, Timex: Indiglo).

I’m a big fan of both: I love cars and I love watches, automatic watches. I’m still into cars big time but equally I truly enjoy collecting mechanical pieces and wearing a different one every day.

The great thing about watches in the long-term is that there are no replacements of what makes a complicated timepiece a complicated timepiece. Not like cars with ICE engines being forcefully replaced step by step by EVs (I’m totally against it: let customers decide what they want to buy!). Knowing that hundreds of little parts make a watch tick (no battery, no computer) is fantastic, it’s art…

    Carpe Diem!

I literally was thinking the exact same thing today. Too many cars, all of which require a lot of space, effort, maintenance, and use to keep running properly. Been toying with the idea of selling 1-2 cars and adding a few watches - MBand F and Breguet at the top of my current list (anything but Rolex)

I agree, the mid-engined, high HP, manual transmission supercars of the recent past fit me like a glove. I have two more or less keepers (Diablo Roadster and Ford GT) and nothing new really gets me excited. And both are very personal to me. So yes, I'm looking more at watches these days.

I love both. My dad got me into both. Recently my love - and fascination for watches has really increased... I've started to repair and build watches.
My love of cars is still there, but I do agree the older I get the less ... craving for a newer / new Ferrari I have.
I am lucky as I have both the car and watch I love - 599 and Steel white face Daytona... everything else is gravy...
