Have a '98 355 F1 Spider and love it. Never selling it. It has taken almost 6 years to get right, but a sorted F1 car is pure heaven to drive. Now....I think I need a coupe of some type as I have two convertibles for fun cars (355 + TR8) Looking at, and thinking, 430, Gallrado, etc But I think I want to add a 355 GTS instead. Why shouldn't I do it?
This is easy.....contact Marc (Xenu) and buy his F1 GTS. He is the original owner, sub 10k mile car. Cool guy. I spent over an hour on the phone with him tonight.
No reason you shouldn't! Only you can decide what you want. Come on over if you want to try a berlinetta
That's funny. Adoption is the term around here. I have bought several cars for fun, Thinking a 2 year run (right?).....I sold one...once... My wife freaks when I buy a car, then explodes when I suggest we sell it. WTF? She is way more attached to these cars than I am....so we do not buy them, we adopt them. I am OK with it...but... *shrug*
If you have the financial means and the desire, then there's no reason why you shouldn't. The only thing I would clarify in my own mind, if I were you, is precisely what it is I want. You stated that you desire a coupe yet you're focusing on a GTS. Both are amazing cars, but a true coupe if the berlinetta.
Au contraire mon frère. I have enjoyed 20 years of ownership of my 1998GTS F1 but for health reasons, I am considering selling her. I have become too old and ugly to pull off driving such a beautiful car. You guys should listen to Dave Rocks he is a pretty sharp guy. I had the pleasure of speaking with him today and he really appreciates the 355. Here's the deal. If you are interested please PM me with your email or a phone number and a good time to call. I prefer to handle my business by private treaty rather than in a public forum. I have really enjoyed this car but I think the time has come for somebody else to have fun with her. I will only sell to a good home. Please don't tell me a Toyota or VW is faster than a 355. Be cool, don't be a fool. LOL Ugly reflections in this picture are not included. I am looking for feedback on issues that a GTS might have that a spider / berlinetta does not. Things that jump to mind... How hard is it to pull the top off? One person or two? Can you really stow it? (Insert Jeremy Clarkson here) Does it squeak? If so are there remedies? Because of the loss of the roof, are the buttress cracks more prevalent? Less? Anything else that comes to mind.... Who has a Swatters Blue one with yellow calipers, sheilds and a mocha interior???? (I am not picky at all) I know all about the 355 and the F1 system (more than I care to actually) so that does not bother me or I would not be here. But specific unique issues to the GTS are things I need to learn.
Wow. That's gorgeous. Do the tops come color matched to the car? I thought they were all black. No? Aftermarket work to match them? They look better that way.
One person can easily remove the top. I don't like to stow it behind the seats as I keep my seat all the way back (I'm 6 foot tall) and I don't want the seat rubbing on the top although the top does have a cover. It does squeak a bit but that is typically silenced by the exhaust note. I would love to buy Marc's car but don't have the room and I already have the same variant
why not? here's some reasons. 1. they eat clutches (3rd cousin's rumor that he read somewhere) 2. the internet says that a major service costs 1000000000000000 yen and takes years. 3. this forum can't decided on which .002 degrees of cam timing is better. before top dead center or after. 4. hoovie's fire 5. 355's will never be collectible by all means you should do it!...asking a forum passionate about the cars if you should or not...LOLOL! sjd
Meh. I already own a 355. Internet crap is crap. When I bought mine it didn't run and the F1 system was completely in-op. Just a car. I have 20k miles in 7 years of ownership on a car that did not run. I want to know about the GTS top and the issues specific to that configuration. Dave answered most of it.
Clarkson wasn't wrong in reference to his own car. The carbon seats don't have a flip forward feature, only a knob for adjustment. So, he would have to rotate the adjusters of both seats to allow room for the top then rotate both back. Definitely would be a pain compared to the standard seats.
Just buy a good one. You already own one so you know the story. Even though the GTS is my favourite, the spider is very under rated. If one doesn’t look good I don’t blame one for not wanting a spider . Better to keep ugly mugs covered up LOL.
Do the research and then get back to me. I own one of the fastest non turbo’d 355s in NA and I have gone the distance with some pretty cool cars but as much as I hate to admit it, the Vdub is not to be taken lightly and if you get caught outta sync, it will beat your fool ass. Edit: BTW, your car looks nice.
JVB- I'm not throwing shade on VWs whatsoever. The "faster" line of reasoning that you continue to pursue is simply irrelevant. A Tesla is "faster" than almost all Ferraris in a straight line up to 120 mph but how could you compare one to a Ferrari 355 as a sports car? I own or have owned faster cars than my 355. The 355 is just really a really fun great looking sports car, and the GTI is not a comparison IMHO. Not throwing shade on you, I'm just a smart @ss. Here is a car I own that I have up for sale that is MUCH faster than my 355, but it is far from being a sports car in any way. https://www.atomicmotors.net/Pre-owned-Inventory-1963-Chevrolet-Car-BELAIR-Atomic-Motors-2022388?ref=list Image Unavailable, Please Login
X, it’s all good man but like I said earlier to Jim, I wouldn’t be caught dead in one, and you are right, I just didn’t want to hear anymore lines like “be cool don’t be a fool” LOL I know you just got off the phone with Dave and a little of that may have rubbed off, but if you start using lines like “you got it Pontiac “ I’m afraid I can no longer be your fchat pal LOL!!! I kid, I kid... Best regards, Jeff
