By accident this morning while at the hardware store, I scratched a door of a Toyota Tacoma while opening the door of my Concorde. While writing a note to the owner that I was going to leave on his windshield, the guy came out to get in his car. I introduced myself and showed him what I did and that I was leaving him a note with my name and # so he could contact me for payment of the repair. He took the note.

When he looked at the scratch, he got pissed and and started telling me what an inconsiderate moron I was! In shock, I asked him how many people would fess up to the damage and want to make sure it gets fixed! He took the note I wrote with my name & #, got in his car saying "I'll get an F'ing repair quote and call you, while slamming his door saying *******!

So much for being Mr. Nice Guy that would want the same to happen to me if my door was scratched! This guy was such a prick, I may not even want to pay for the damage! I'll probably think twice before offering this again!

You did the right thing and that has to serve as its own reward. I've had two instances in the last 6 months where our cars were hit and nobody bothered to fess up. Who knows. Maybe after he has time to think about it, he'll realize what a rare act of honesty this was and change his attitude. Or, maybe he's just a hopeless prick.

When he calls you, tell him to *uck off, that you have no idea what he's talking about.
Then mail him a note saying he should have been as polite as you.

Nah. Wait for the repair estimate, tell him you need three quotes to make sure he's not bs'ing you.

Then, tell him to make sure at least one quote is from MAACO, 'cause that's all you're paying for.

Finally, when you settle on a number, some weeks later, pay him in nickels, shipped UPS to his office, if he has one, so he has to lug them to the bank and pay a 5% fee to deposit them.

Welcome to the world, my friend, where no good deed goes unpunished. Some folks just arent very grateful, are they? Are you sure you weren't in the Walmart parking lot with FarmerDave at 3:00 AM?

You didn't leave any incriminating info on the note other than name and phone number did you? Didn't leave any paint on his car traceable to yours? If not, then he said, minus mailing him back (and incriminating yourself)! }:)

Indeed, make sure to a low ball quote for the repair. Most paintless dent places have expanded their techniques & can fix it cheaper than you think. When I had my shop in Houston, many times I had customers that came in for repair quotes. They even asked in to inflate the repair price so they can get a little something to pocket for their troubles. I never liked dealing with people like that, more trouble than their worth.

You should be a big an ass as you can to him, you gave him a chance and he blew it, make him get several quotes, don't return his calls with any promptness, and then pay in nickles like dm_n_stuff said. But you did do the right thing by leaving your name.

WOW! What a mix of replies. I'll wait until he calls me an post the conversation. I too do not enjoy dealing with jerks when trying to be more of an above-board type. It sucks when you get slapped in the face trying to be nice to somebody....Any married guys out there? ( ! )
