Today I had an interesting conversation with one of my neighbors. Apparently some people on the block think my Mondial is too loud. Actually, I suspect it's mostly the women on the block that don't like it, as the men always smile, give me thumbs up, and engage in conversation.

Interestingly there are two Harley Davidsons and a Triumph cafe racer bike that are louder than my F-car, but that seems to go un-noticed. Not to mention that I live in the city, which is a fairly loud environment anyway.

    Anyone else have this issue?

My neighbor hates my car as well, he came over to tell me my engine noises were scaring his dog ! My wife probably hates it as well, but doesn't say to my face .

I used to have this problem before I moved. My neighbour from across the street once said to me as I backed out of the driveway, "Sounds like it needs a muffler!"

I was tempted with a couple of replies. 1. "Sorry, what did you say? I can't hear you over the sound of the engine!" or 2. "Lady, YOU need a muffler."

Instead, I just smiled and explained that it came from the factory that way. I mentioned the problem to my other neighbours on my end of the block, asking if the car was loud and bothered them. They all said no, they liked hearing it. Even the 86 year old lady next door!

I have a 69 street rod that I stopped bringing home because I felt it was a little too loud for the neighborhood,in fact, I would turn it off and coast down my driveway, now I leave it at my shop.

My Fcar was quiet enough but I have since had a Nouvalari exhaust put on while it's being serviced, I pray it isn't too loud, if it is, i don't care, I'm enjoying it but I may refrain from reving

There may be a jealous factor involved in your neighbors dismay.

The stock Mondial is kind of on the quiet side compared to allot of other cars, especially hot rods and Harley MCs. No comparison for me. Sounds like envy to me. It's a unique sound but I would not call the stock sound loud. Did I see a post from you showing carbs on it. That could make it louder.

I've had "neighbor/noise" issues since I bought my 328. Finally, to keep the peace,
agreed not to run the car after 8:00 PM nor during 2:00-4:00 PM "nap time" for the
little kids next door. Plus I no longer "roar" into the cul-de-sac in first just for one
last blast of sweet Italian music.

Keeping the peace with neighbors DOES pay dividends, IMO.

I used to run my race bike the night before the races. I suspect, it was quite a bit louder than your Mondial, by an order of 3 or 4 times as loud. Neighbors hated it. Too bad.

Oh Boy............ I fortunately don't have to deal with those issues - - and no, I don't live in a mountain cave :):) In my town home complex in Burbank, my neighbors seem to love Rachel and her exhaust sound (Hyperflows & XOst). One neighbor gal (adult) directly behind me, has asked me to always "give her" a throttle blip upon my return home from whatever. After the blip, I hear "thank you" from her office window !!

    How cool is that?? :):)

I had a very loud exhaust on my 308 and after some years even with no real complain I started to feel embarassed and uncomfortable to drive the car at night in my hometown. I replaced it with a more quiet system.

I understand all the comments. I'm definitely not looking for any sort of conflict with my neighbors. It's not worth the trouble, even though we're looking to relocate. Maybe I should just ask them if there's anything I can do. Sometimes a little effort goes a long way...

This car does have carbs and a custom exhaust--Tubi headers, no cats, and a custom magnaflow muffler. I don't think it's louder than a stock Mondial, but it definitely has a more "bassy" note to the exhaust sound. I can see how that would be construed as "loud". I have a 911SC with a similar exhaust set-up and similar exhaust note, but no one has ever commented about that.

I should clarify that I'm not driving in any sort of aggressive fashion, not revving the engine excessively, not taking the car to redline while driving down the block...none of the usual culprits. I leave for work around 10 in the morning, sometimes later. I typically return between 3:30 and 6pm depending on how much I've got to do that day. I don't ever take the car out past 8pm. Also, I live in pretty close proximity to a major intersection. You can hear straight-pipe motorcycles and all sorts of tuned imports racing by at all hours of the day and night. It's Chicago--definitely not at all like the relative quiet of a suburban community.

I think it's a psychological thing. If it were a motorcycle, it would be viewed as much more innocuous because of its relatively small physical size. But since its a car, it's viewed as more obtrusive.

Anyway, I can justify it until I'm blue in the face, but it doesn't mean they'll ever see things the way I see them.

Rachel has most of them under her spell simply because of her looks. The neighbor I was referring to, loves the sound of "engines". She likes diesels when they're on the Jake Brake, loves the raw thump-thump of a Harley ----------- so you can understand why she (like us) is blown away by the sound of "Maranello".

No cops being called to my area!! :):)

    Cheers, Hank

I've invited all my neighbors to my crawfish boils and some have gotten my cookies so they all like me. A few have said "sure is loud" with smiles on their faces, no complaints.

My 87 Mondial is all stock but I have noticed it does have quite an effect. It rattles my whole house. Nothing else rattles my house. I think there is some sort of percussion the exhaust lets out that is unique and while not necessarily loud really has an effect. I set off a car alarm idling by a car the other day. Again, the car isn't loud but it does set off car alarms. Sometimes the exhaust can be felt as much as heard. That may be what gets to the dogs. My buddies dog ran for cover the other day and peed in the house a bit when I idled up his driveway. Dunno :D I did tell him his dog needs emotional help.

I try not to fire it up at odd hours. You might try backing it into the garage so when you fire it up your home takes most of the vibration.

Of course when I say it's not loud that is coming from someone who has driven his car cross country with the top down. I might be a bit deaf at this point.

In my Partial Quote of your post, I would only change the fifth word (car) to Ferrari. There could be some envy/jealousy going on. So, be the loving neighbor. Take a few kids for some rides and you'll see - - the negative attitudes will get better, and the positive attitudes will get stronger.

Our Ferrari doesn't bother the neighbors...It's the Fiat that drives them crazy...well, actually it's not the Fiat but the great big barking lab in the back!!!

I try to be respectful of the times I use the car even though I haven't had any complaints. All of my neighbors are nice. It doesn't hurt that I assist them with car maintenance.

LOL - I brought home mine at 2:30am and woke the whole development. Not my fault - headlight burned out as soon as I left the mechanic and had to turn around to try to resolve. Ended up pulling the other headlight out and driving home with the hi-beams on. Lost a few hours trying to resolve and ended up getting home much later than expected. Let's just say that everyone knew I got a new toy, lol.

"The brown note is a theoretical infrasonic frequency that would cause humans to lose control of their bowels due to resonance. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that a "brown note" exists, using sound waves transmitted through air."

I believe when "wax" refered to the "brown note"...he meant a "big pile of dog cr*p" on the front lawn....Mark
