I am starting a business, and of course I need computers to run the business. What do you think is a good (or best) virus protection software ? There is a lot of hype and BS out there re. viruses, especially at Best Buy, the only computer store left in the world, but somewhere in F Chat land there must be several of you that can tell me what works well for you ? thanks Andy
Microsoft's Forefront product is good, but there are others as well, Eset, Symantec, AVG to name a few. Be aware, however, that virus scanners are only one component to an overall security strategy. Equally important is employee education and awareness, a good patch/update management policy for your connected resources, and in some cases, an in-line network device to filter and limit internet access. Intrusion detection systems are also helpful in identifying suspicious activity on your network. Find a decent network management firm in your area, and pay them an hour to assess your needs and make recommendations relative to your acceptable level of risk, data loss tolerance, etc. It will be money well spent, since network security is really not a one-size-fits-all approach. Best of luck with your venture.
Hey, Firstly, I think I'd ask the mods to move this to the technology forum - This is really the Q&A about cars section! Anyway, and not wishing to get into a religious debate, have you considered Apple kit? It flat out "just works" and is, to all intents & purposes, immune to the security issues on PC's. You still need a reasonably configured firewall and a decent backup strategy, but won't spend countless hours cleaning & reloading operating systems after someone screws up. My 02c, Cheers, Ian
Interesting thread for the technical section, lol. First off, if you are starting a business I would recommend getting a Silver subscription which will give you access to the business forum; lots of smart folks in there and well worth the $15/year for the knowledge that is shared. For anyone to give a meaningful response, you are going to have to share a few more details like: - Are any of the computers going to be POS terminals? - Are we talking about a laptop to do consulting work, or an entire network of workstations? - Are there servers involved containing work product, customer info, etc? Like Whyte mentioned, Forefront is good. You need to consider your setup and how to layer protection; i.e. your firewall, anti-spam solution, intrusion detection, virus protection and patch management should be well integrated if you plan on doing the administration yourself. Good luck with your new business!
