I have a full time job ive been at for over 6 years. This job has made me relocate several times, and now i live 1.5 hours from family(used to be 14 hours away), so i dont want to drive that everyday, so i live in the city my jobs in and travel to family on weekends. which leads me to this...

im bored. and quite frankly, money hungry. Not afraid to work. And im trying to think of something i could do as i second job to occupy my evenings monday-friday. Ive considered all the "normal" part time jobs; fast food, walmart, restaurants.....etc etc. but i make a pretty decent wage at my full time job, so i cant wrap my head around anything near minimum wage.

i work 7-4 with occasional opportunities for overtime. and id like to find something from 430 to 10 or 11pm. mon-fri

    what would you do?

i work for at&t. i used to be a service tech and could pretty much control my overtime. i wasnt satisfied with less than 20 hours OT a week. but they started laying people off, and i started getting bumped around the country. (funny how the little old lady can wait over a week to get her phone fixed, while the techs are all being forced 60 hour weeks, and at&t can STILL have layoffs??????)

now im a lineman in ky. and theres VERY little overtime. so to answer you, i work on anything related to telecommunications. and i have a CDL.

^ yes. and ive started in real estate investing/landlording. id like to get started in a little bit of everything.

but to answer you specifically, ive got a decent amount saved right now and could probably start a business pretty quickly. BUT where im at.... the town is just so small... im not sure what would work here.

Theres always the internet, you dont need brick and mortar places. I think your time would be much better spent building your own castle in your free time instead of building someone elses.

What hobbies do you have that could be capitalized on?

Id also say get a subscription so you can get access to the business section, its more than worth its cost so you can ask people who have btdt. I need to reup mine when i get home.

You've mentioned overtime several times... in the "run your own business" world, there's
really no such thing, not like that anyway. But I fully know what you mean. I worked
for MANY years as a fire alarm tech (union), as well as security, sound systems, CCTV,
whatever. I too really looked forward to the OT - especially "golden time" (3x hourly rate)
for emergency call-outs on holiday nights.

But maybe think outside that box - what about being a sales rep for Motorola? Or
Mitel, Vodavi, Norstar, etc. in the phone hardware world? I'm sure lots of those
manufacturers also use independent reps (that's what I do, but in pro audio)... you
could think about starting your own rep firm.

But any business outside of hourly work will be compensated on performance - i.e.,
sales bonuses, quota contests, spiffs, etc. It's a VERY different world than the
hourly world where you are now.

Perhaps consider ADT or Honeywell as an alarm tech - hourly with overtime, perhaps
    in the CWA or IBEW.

Tough choices lie ahead... that's the only constant in this. Unless you just stay
where you are and find a way to "reinvent" your interest in the job.
