I have always thought about, but I believe next summer I will actually do it. I plan on saving this winter and buying a bike next spring. I have friends that ride so they can start me on basics and then I will take a course as well. I am completely foreign to motorcycles so anything you can offer will be of use.

    Now for the questions:

    1. What is a good bike (new or used) in the $5k range?

    2. In terms of safetey equipment, what brands are good?

    3. Would you recommend a sport bike or cruiser for my first?

    Thanks much,
    Chris

I'm just bored, waiting for V1 to respond to JakerMC. Think I'll be waiting much longer?

im not gonna get into the what CC size or sportbike vs cruiser vs standard debate, cause i think everyones got a different opinion on that. i ended up going with the less popular opinon and buying a 600cc sportbike for my first, although it is an older less "racey" model so whatever.

when it comes to gear like gloves and jackets, id say dainese is probably the top top of the line but its also stupidly expensive. alot of people think alpinestars is one of the better brands, better than the older joe rocket stuff but i've heard some good stuff about joe rockets 2006 line. heard alot of good things about the brand motoGP. teknic is alright too, id say its "low midrange" if that makes any sense. icon is a bit of a strange brand. some people say its just for posers, some say its good, not really sure. spidi is supposedly good too, though i dont hear about it much. agv sport is good, probably on par with alpinestars if not better.

for boots, oxtar, sidi, and alpinestars are all good.

for helmets, id say shoei, suomy, and hjc are all good. theres really a ton of helmets, and for the most part theyre all good, just make sure to get a full faced model.

with all of the gear, try to find stores to try everything on, then find it cheaper online on kneedraggers, newenough, or some of the other places. every brand has a different sizing chart and they all fit differently

I wouldn't trust my life to an HJC helmet...

Also, you forgot to mention Arai ;)
